Ongoing Battlestar Galactica thread of doom.

Is this real life?
I need to do another watch through of it all. I'm currently working on building some of Galactica's interiors in a game engine so people can virtually walk around the ship.

I kind of want to do another watch through but also I'm scared I won't enjoy it as much beause I remember it going off the rails quite a bit in season 3 and 4.

BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO BOXEY?

It is on Comet, so I'm finally getting to watch it. I may say more sophisticated things later, but for now I'll just say that Katee Sackhoff makes me jack-off. I wanna buttfuck Starbuck.

I occasionally catch it on Comet because it's there, mostly as background noise. They have weird cuts, they bleep out the word 'Frak' (what?), they blot out lip movement for lip readers, and the commercials are awful. You might have better luck with peacock.tv, since it's a free option. And the eps are probably more intact. Free as in all it takes is a throwaway email account and a password.

I was wondering about that. Hadn't noticed it in earlier episodes, but the past few days they've started bleeping the dialog and I was wondering if SyFy suddenly got blue or all of the sudden "frak" was a dirty word.

Do they keep running through it? Because I came in on the second half of Season 2. I'd like to catch the whole run but I figured since they were doing 2 hours a night, 5 nights a week, this was a limited run--not strictly a marathon, but not something where they'd keep showing the same 78 or so episodes every 2 months or so.

I watched the miniseries on DVD and caught some of the later episodes on SyFy, but it kind of suffered in first run--the wait between episodes made it hard to get into it for me. Now I'm hooked. I really don't have 10 extra hours a week to waste on television, but I find myself being annoyed by not having it on Saturday and Sunday.

My measure of it as good entertainment is when I'm willing to overlook plot holes for the story. Stuff like when they had the Cylon virus. I guess maybe they were so wrapped up in their genocide plot that they overlooked that this was also a neat way to get rid of all the sleeper agents in the fleet. Just give everyone a shot and that's the end of four of the Final Five. Or all the mysticism with angels and Starbuck and the "head" characters. It's kind of--literally--a deus ex machina device, but because I'm enjoying the story, I allow it.

I think Comet is on at least it's third run-through of the show, and with each showing the weird cuts and bleeps get stranger. I get that it's over the air so they have to be careful, but they're a little too careful. Not much in the show was offensive. They let all the violence slide, like whacking Xena over the head with a rock, but for some reason "godsdammit" is offensive or something.

Here's hoping the do at least 1 more so I can catch the first 26 episodes or so. That said, it's stupid they do a 2 hour bloc of it. Great way to burn people out on a 76 episode show.

The evolution of television profanity is interesting. You can say "damn." But you can't say "goddamn." There was a Monkees rerun on awhile back that had The Devil in it (IIRC) and you couldn't say "Hell" in those days.

But what I really wanted to mention is: So how many Trekkie Easter eggs/raspberries are there in the show? Seelix/Neelix, Six of Twelve/Seven of Nine, D'Ana Three/Deanna Troi...

There was that one episode with Nana Visitor.

Wiki tells me when the Final Four start meeting they do it at weapons locker 1701D, so I'll be on the lookout for that.

OK. I've watched enough of this to weigh in. I'm fairly religious, so all the freaky spiritual stuff is pretty powerful to me. I'd be curious what an atheist and/or agnostic thinks about all the messages of angels and forgiveness and God did it. Because even enjoying it myself I see where some might feel cheated by the plot.

Second observation is that there are plot holes and cheats large enough to drive a truck through on a regular basis, but I tolerate because it is so darn beautiful. The cinematography, the performances, the plot twists, the emotion, the costuming and effects. The music. It's just thrilling to watch.

Beyond that, on a more personal note, I suspect it is fucking with me. I've got an 11 year old dog with a bandaged foot, where they removed a second tumor and the foot hasn't been healing. I lost both my parents to cancer. I'm living in a city where I don't have any relatives and precious few friends of the conventional sense. While I'm watching this, I'm also rereading "The Lord of the Rings." The last time I read that was out loud, to my mother while she was dying of cancer. As a product of the Internet and BBS' I'm cautious about revealing spoilers. But one of the things I'd do over if I had a chance is to do a Uncle Columbo in "The Princess Bride" where he tells Fred Savage that Wesley doesn't die (or whatever), because she was hanging on the story...right up until Frodo gets "killed" by Shelob, the giant spider. She lost all interest immediately after that--before I could get to the next chapter where Sam finds out he's still alive, and I wasn't able to ever get her back into it. I wound up finishing the book to my dog, who was 2 at the time. Now she's 11 and feeling her years. I feel a bit bad that I'm not reading it aloud to her, but let's face it, the only way you have time for that is if you're on some kind of FMLA leave and you literally have nothing else to do but sit by someone's bed and read to them.

So yeah, I'm in a weird mental state at the moment. And BSG has at least something to do with it.

I did feel a bit cheated by "God did it" in the final season. Can't remember all the plot points but it was something to do with the final five Cylons. And Starbuck spending half the season trying to find out how she was alive only to just disappear in the finale. It wasn't even specifically that they used "God" to explain a plot point, it was that it was so obvoius they were just making the story up as they went along and all the thinking I did in the first three seasons was pointless because it could be dismissed with "don't think about it, just pretend it was God!" If you want to use God as a plot point that's fine but at least, to steal a line from the opening, "have a plan."

Maybe I'd feel differently if I watched it all back.
