NC State accepts NCAA referral to try case with newly formed panel
In July, NC State received a notice of allegations from the NCAA regarding the Wolfpack's recruitment of former star player Dennis Smith Jr. In December, NC State officials disputed that there was sufficient evidence to prove the NCAA's allegation that Gassnola gave $40,000 to Early, who was supposed to help facilitate getting the money to Smith's family.

Wake Forest fires basketball coach Danny Manning

Wake Forest has fired basketball coach Danny Manning after six seasons, the school announced Saturday.
"After a comprehensive review of the men's basketball program, and with the support of President Hatch and University leadership, I have determined that it is time for a change in our head coaching position,'' athletic director John Currie said in a statement. The Demon Deacons never finished above .500 in the ACC under Manning, who had a 14-42 conference record over the past three seasons. Last season, they went 13-18 overall and 6-14 in the ACC, finishing in a tie for last in the conference standings. Wake Forest finished 12th or worse in the league in five of Manning's six seasons. Overall, Manning went 78-111 in his six seasons in Winston-Salem and 30-80 in conference play.

Who Wake Forest could hire to replace Danny Manning

While Wake Forest hasn't been nationally relevant lately, there was a stretch when the Demon Deacons were in the ACC hunt on a regular basis. Under Dave Odom in the 1990s, they won at least one NCAA tournament game in five of six seasons and reached the Sweet 16 in three of four seasons. When Skip Prosser took over, they went to the NCAA tournament in each of his first four seasons and finished in the top three of the ACC standings all four years.

Whom Wake Forest could hire to replace Danny Manning

Manning had been on the hot seat for the past couple years, but his guaranteed contract through 2025 and accompanying buyout, believed to be around $15 million, have been an issue for Wake Forest brass. However, after another subpar season in Winston-Salem, athletic director John Currie who took over last spring made the move. The biggest issue with the job is its three high-profile neighbors: Duke, North Carolina and NC State. Two of those are among the four best programs in college basketball, while NC State has two national championships in its history and has won 20-plus games in each of the past three seasons

Top candidates

Steve Forbes, East Tennessee State:
Forbes is overdue for a power conference job. He has done a phenomenal job at ETSU, winning 130 games in five seasons and earning two regular-season titles.

Wes Miller, UNC Greensboro:
Miller, who played at North Carolina, has been the name buzzing around this job for most of the season. UNCG reached the NCAA tournament in 2018 and was the final team left out in 2019.

Pat Kelsey, Winthrop:
Kelsey has been the head coach at Winthrop since 2012, winning at least a share of the Big South regular-season title on three occasions and going to the NCAA tournament in 2017. The Eagles would have gone last season after.

Ryan Odom, UMBC:
Another familiar name to Wake Forest, Odom's father was the head coach of the Demon Deacons from 1989 to 2001. Odom has spent the last four seasons as the head coach of UMBC, leading the Retrievers to the NCAA tournament in 2018 and pulling off the first 16-over-1 upset when they knocked off top-seeded Virginia.

Notre Dame lands top recruit Olivia Miles days after naming new coach Niele Ivey

EWYuTf7X0AMTMZO

It didn't take long for Niele Ivey to get a win at Notre Dame. Named the school's new women's basketball coach on Wednesday, Ivey landed one of the nation's most prized recruits on Friday. Olivia Miles, ranked No. 2 in the high school class of 2021 by ESPN HoopGurlz, announced on Twitter that she has committed to play for the Fighting Irish.
Miles is the third top-two prospect to commit to Notre Dame in the past six years, joining Brianna Turner (No. 2, 2014) and Sam Brunelle, who finished as the sixth-ranked prospect in 2019 but was ranked No. 1 when she committed. A 5-foot-10 point guard who attended Blair Academy in New Jersey, Miles averaged 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.6 assists as a junior this past season. She was also a starter for the United States team that won the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Chile.
