Maryland's Ashley Owusu says she's transferring to Virginia Tech


Guard Ashley Owusu, who was Big Ten women's basketball freshman of the year in 2020 while at Maryland, announced on social media Saturday that she is transferring to Virginia Tech.Owusu was No. 2 on ESPN writer Charlie Creme's recent ranking of top transfers in women's basketball who had yet to commit. She was ranked the No. 5 recruit by ESPN HoopGurlz in the class of 2019. Owusu averaged 14.3 points and 3.7 assists as a junior this past season for Maryland, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA women's basketball tournament. In 2021, she won the Ann Meyers Drysdale award for top shooting guard.

Remember the good old days when a top-25 list, even a Way-Too-Early list, had some staying power? When rankings could be relied on to cover the women's college basketball landscape for a few months? No longer. Two teams in this Way-Too-Early Top 25 edition were not here last month. LSU, which now checks in at No. 22, wasn't even close to making it onto the list then. Maryland meanwhile has had something of a journey on this list, going from top five to nearly out of the top 20, to finally landing in the top 16.

Louisville has hired Milt Wagner, former Cardinals star and the grandfather of the No. 1 recruit in the country, as the program's director of player development and alumni relations. He is the grandfather of No. 1-ranked rising senior D.J. Wagner, who is currently uncommitted but is the subject of an intense recruiting battle between Louisville and Kentucky. Kentucky coach John Calipari coached D.J. Wagner's father, Dajuan Wagner, at Memphis, and new Louisville coach Kenny Payne played with Milt Wagner on Louisville's 1986 national championship team.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons hire American's Megan Gebbia as women's basketball head coach


Wake Forest has hired American's Megan Gebbia as its new women's basketball coach.The Demon Deacons announced Gebbia's hiring Thursday evening, a little more than two weeks after the firing of former Demon Deacons all-conference performer Jen Hoover.The 49-year-old Gebbia had spent the past nine seasons at American, leading the Eagles to three NCAA Tournament bids while twice being named the Patriot League coach of the year. Last year's team won 23 games and reached the NCAA Tournament. The challenge facing Gebbia is to help the Demon Deacons build to becoming a regular NCAA Tournament team. The program has only reached two tournaments in its history, the first in 1988 and then in 2021.
