Team USA loses to Lithuania; Italy up next in FIBA quarters

Team USA has taken a few losses over the decades in major international competition when roster flaws have been exposed, focus has been an issue and when an opponent puts together a brilliant performance. Sometimes it's the result of more than one of those factors, and that was the case Sunday night in the FIBA World Cup. Lithuania added to its illustrious history by scoring another win over the U.S., bullying and out-executing the Americans in a 110-104 victory. Nine different Lithuania players made a 3-pointer, six had at least three rebounds, six had at least two assists and five scored in double figures.Team USA was led by a valiant Anthony Edwards, who never relented and finished with 35 points, just three off Kevin Durant's Team USA scoring record. Mikal Bridges also played tirelessly and scored 14 points plus worked as hard as anyone on defense and in chasing loose balls. The record shows that Mindaugas Kuzminskas (14 points), Vaidas Kariniauskas (15) and Jonas Valanckunas (12) led Lithuania in scoring, but credit for the win could go to the entire roster.

Team USA braces for win or go home at WC
The FIBA World Cup has reached its final phase, the knockout round. Despite the stinging 110-104 defeat Sunday, the Americans made it there. The defending world champs, Spain, didn't. Olympic silver medalist France didn't. Olympic bronze medalist Australia didn't, either.

Team USA bounces back at World Cup, routs Italy to reach semifinals

If there can be such a thing as an ideal loss, Team USA might have experienced it against Lithuania at the FIBA World Cup on Sunday. Team USA will get the winner of Germany-Latvia, who play Wednesday, in the semifinals on Friday. But Tuesday's other quarterfinal brought other interesting news as Lithuania, which had proved to have a matchup advantage on the Americans, was eliminated as its recent hot shooting went cold against Serbia in a blowout. After having fallen behind by double figures in the first half in three of their five games in the tournament, American players and coaches emphasized the need to reverse that trend. And Team USA sprinted out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter Tuesday.

Team USA must keep pressure on Germany, coach Steve Kerr says

Entering the medal round of the FIBA World Cup, Team USA made a resolution: If the Americans were going to go home without the gold medal, it would be because they got beat playing their game, not bending to the opponent. Pressure, speed and relentless play. That's what they put on the Italians in a blowout victory in the quarterfinals and what they vow to do again when they face Germany in the semifinals Friday (8:40 a.m. ET, ESPN2). Germany presents a different challenge as the only team without a loss in the World Cup, a perfect 6-0. Although not a great offensive rebounding or particularly dangerous shooting team, Germany does have a size advantage.

Sue Bird named ambassador for 2026 Women's Basketball World Cup

FIBA formally introduced Bird, the now-retired U.S. great, on Friday as the global ambassador for the 2026 Women's Basketball World Cup that will be played in Berlin. Bird takes the role from Pau Gasol, who served as ambassador for the 2022 women's tournament in Sydney. Bird is a nine-time major international gold medalist -- five in the Olympics, four in the World Cup, where she was also part of a bronze-medal effort in 2006 -- over her two decades with the women's national team, and was USA Basketball's women's athlete of the year in 2021. Bird is the only player with four women's World Cup gold medals. The women's tournament is expanding, going from 12 teams last year to 16 for the 2026 edition, with FIBA saying growing the women's game on all levels -- more women playing, more women coaching, more women in leadership roles -- is among its top priorities.

Germany ends Team USA's FIBA World Cup run in semifinals

When Team USA assembled its roster and decided on its game plan for this World Cup cycle, it made a bet. It was a sensible bet, and the Americans stacked the deck as much as they could to try to win it, but the reality was they entered knowing they left themselves exposed. That wager -- that size differential could be overcome with other attributes -- has failed. Germany, another European team that towered over the Americans, used the given advantage and beat Team USA 113-111 in the world semifinals Friday. Germany was simply able to get more chances to score because it often was able to get the ball back when it missed. The Germans pulled down 16 offensive rebounds, leading to 25 second-chance points (Team USA had eight).

Serbia runs past Canada to reach FIBA World Cup final

No Nikola Jokic, no problem. Even with its best player sitting out this summer, Serbia is going to play for gold at the Basketball World Cup. Serbia (6-1) is in the World Cup final for the second time in the last three tournaments. It lost to the U.S. in the 2014 final, and will face either the Americans or Germany on Sunday night in the title game at Manila Bogdan .Bodganovic scored 23 points and Serbia defeated Canada 95-86 in the World Cup semifinals on Friday. Ognjen Dobric and Nikola Milutinov each scored 16 for Serbia, the best-shooting team so far in the tournament -- making 55% of its shots coming into the day, then connecting on 62% to end Canada's hopes of gold.

Team USA loses OT thriller to Canada in World Cup bronze-medal game

An NBA game broke out at the FIBA World Cup on Sunday, with Team USA and Team Canada falling into the high-octane, free-flowing, star vs. star game they are so comfortable with in a fun goodbye to the league-obsessed Filipinos. Shai Gilgeous played his superstar role, scoring seven of his 31 points to start overtime and eventually power Canada's 127-118 victory to claim the bronze medal. Canada also got a statement game, loudly and unexpectedly, from Dil;on Btooks, who scored 39 points as part of a shooting masterpiece. The U.S. failed to medal in its second consecutive World Cup, the first time that has happened since 1970. Including the 2019 World Cup and the 2021 Olympics, where Team USA won gold, the Americans have now lost seven times. The roster this summer that focused on quickness and versatility has simply proved ineffective

Dennis Schroder leads Germany to first World Cup gold medal

Four years ago, German basketball wasn't in the best place. Dirk Nowitzki had retired; they missed the Olympics altogether in 2016 and at the last FIBA World Cup they were a distant and disappointing 18th. The journey from there is what made standing on the stage receiving their first-ever World Cup gold Sunday all the more meaningful for the Germans, which they earned after completing a perfect tournament with an 83-77 victory over Serbia. Schroder had 28 points as he led a high-speed attack that is truly what makes the Germans a variation on the typical European power. They have a line of excellent big men including NBA players Montz Wagner and Danirl Theis. But Schroder's speed with the ball and ability to collapse defenses tirelessly is an invaluable weapon at this level.

Sources: LeBron James, Stephen Curry interested in Team USA
Several players who were part of the 2021 gold-medal-winning team in Tokyo who didn't play in the FIBA World Cup this summer, including Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker and two-time gold medalist Draymond Green, are also candidates to return, sources told ESPN. The U.S. has won the past four Olympic golds in basketball but just two of the past six World Cups.

******
Chris Paul, won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. Kevin Durant has won three Olympic golds and would be a candidate to play again. James, 38, won a bronze in 2004 and golds in 2008 and 2012. Davis won gold in 2012 and was part of the World Cup winner when he last played for Team USA in 2014.
