Panthers Christian McCaffrey chasing 1,000-1,000 without much help
McCaffrey has been saying for weeks that joining Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk in the 1,000-1,000 club won’t mean quite as much because the Panthers aren’t a playoff team. San Francisco went 10-6 and made the playoffs when Craig established the 1,000-1,000 club in 1985. The St. Louis Rams went 13-3 in 1999 and won the Super Bowl when Faulk became the club’s second member.

Cowboys' Jason Witten says he'll decide on future quickly after season
Witten returned to the Cowboys in 2019 after spending one year as ESPN's "Monday Night Football" analyst, signing a one-year deal. He has started every game this season and is third on the team in catches with 59 for 505 yards and four touchdowns.

Serena Williams takes home AP Female Athlete of the Decade honors

Serena Williams dominated the decade, on the court and in conversation. There were, to begin with, the dozen Grand Slam singles titles -- no other woman had more than three over the past 10 seasons -- and the three and a half years in a row at No. 1 in the WTA rankings. Gymnast Simone Biles, the 2019 AP Female Athlete of the Year, finished second to Williams in voting for the decade honor, followed by swimmer Katie Ledecky. Two ski racers were next, with Lindsey Vonn finishing fourth and Mikaela Shiffrin fifth. Three of Williams' five AP Female Athlete of the Year awards came during the last decade, in 2013, 2015 and 2018. She also won in 2002 and 2009.

More than half came from 2010 to '19: four at Wimbledon, three apiece at the U.S. Open and Australian Open, and two at the French Open. That includes a run of four in a row from the U.S. Open in 2014 through Wimbledon in 2015, her second self-styled "Serena Slam." Williams also was the runner-up another seven times at major tournaments over the past decade, including four of the seven she has entered since returning to the tour after having a baby in 2017. In all, she made the final at 19 of the 33 majors she entered during the decade, a rate of nearly 58%.

Among her many accomplishments, though: Reaching at least one Slam final every year, a streak that dates to 2007; Winning gold medals in singles and doubles (with her sister, Venus) at the 2012 Olympics; Becoming the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam singles trophy in the professional era; Becoming the oldest No. 1 in WTA history and equaling Steffi Graf's record for most consecutive weeks atop the rankings; Leading the tour with 37 singles titles, 11 more than anyone else in the decade.

Adam Scott takes Australian PGA for first win since 2016

Adam Scott sealed his first tournament victory in almost four years Sunday when he shot 3-under 69 to win the Australian PGA Championship by two shots. Scott's win gave him the 30th title of his professional career and his second Australian PGA crown after his win at Royal Pines in 2013. He was edged into second place by compatriot Greg Chalmers in a thrilling seven-hole playoff on the same course in 2014. Scott's previous tournament win came 3 years, 9 months, 16 days ago at the WGC-Cadillac Classic in Miami, where he beat Bubba Watson by a shot.

Burrow throws 7 TDs, No. 1 LSU routs No. Oklahoma 63-28
In his first game as a Heisman Trophy winner, Joe Burrow threw for seven touchdowns and 493 yards in the Peach Bowl semifinal game Saturday. As if that wasn't enough, Burrow scored an eighth TD himself on a 3-yard run in the third quarter. It was 49-14 by halftime. The Tigers (14-0) are headed to the title game against No. 3 Clemson -- a 29-23 winner over No. 2 Ohio State in the second semifinal in Arizona.

Trevor Lawrence connected with Travis Etienne on a 34-yard, go-ahead touchdown with 1:49 left in the fourth quarter, capping a 94-yard march Saturday night in the Fiesta Bowl. The Tigers (14-0) will play No. 1 LSU on Jan. 13 in New Orleans, looking for their third national title in the last four seasons. Clemson will face LSU for the first time since the 2012 Chick-fil-A Bowl. Clemson won that meeting 25-24.

LSU a 5-point favorite over Clemson at most sportsbooks
It will be the fourth championship game appearance in the past five seasons for Clemson who has won 29 games in a row and five straight against SEC opponents. LSU advanced to the championship game in impressive fashion, routing Oklahoma 63-28 in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Burrow accounted for eight touchdowns against the overmatched Sooners, including seven through the air. The favored teams in CFP title games are only 2-3 straight up. The Clemson-LSU over/under total opened at 69.5 at Caesars Sportsbook.
