Cam Newton has likely played his last game for Panthers
For all the great things he has done over his career, winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011, being named NFL MVP in 2015, and redefining the league record book for running quarterbacks, there are many reasons the Panthers likely won't bring Newton back next season. Then there’s Newton’s bread and butter, running. He had minus-2 yards on five carries in the first two games this season. He rushed for more than 33 yards in a game only once in his last nine starts.

20 predictions for the 2020 NFL offseason: QB dominoes, Dak's deal and more
Cam Newton will end up in Denver

Elway's next attempt to fix a quarterback is his boldest since Payton Manning. Carolina releases Newton from the final year of his contract, saving $19.1 million in cap space it can apply to Christain NvCaffrey's new deal, and Elway signs the former MVP for the team that beat Newton in his lone Super Bowl appearance.

Christian McCaffrey will reset the running back market
The Panthers have McCaffrey under contract for two more years after 2019. The fourth year of his rookie contract is 2020, and they hold a fifth-year option for 2021.

Brother's death adds 'fuel to fire' for Panthers' Mario Addison

Addison, 32, Carolina’s sacks leader (6.5) has a celebration planned in which he will mimic his brother’s favorite pose if he sacks Aaron Rodgers. “It’s going to be phenomenal," Addison said, anticipating what might happen on the “frozen tundra" at Lambeau Field, where cold temperatures are in the forecast. “I might get stuck in the pose, it’s so cold out there."

Could Kyle Allen be Carolina's Dak Prescott? Why he's the ultimate bargain
Allen has not, historically, been the guy who gets the job. Sure, five years ago he was a red-hot QB recruit out of, who signed to play at Texas A&M and looked to have it all set up in front of him. But from that point, it has not been the smoothest of rides.

.

Let's recap:
Allen lost a competition for the Aggies' starting job to Kenny Hill at the start of 2014, got the job back later that season, opened the 2015 season as the starter but lost the job to Kyler Murray, transferred to Houston, sat out 2016, opened the 2017 season as Houston's starter, lost the job to Kyle Postma, went undrafted in 2018 and got cut from two different practice squads...the Panthers and the Jets -- before landing back on the Panthers practice squad a little over one year ago.

Panthers prove they can contend for a playoff spot despite loss
Playing in a hostile environment in a steady flurry of snow, the Panthers (5-4) went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the NFC. They showed the 51-13 loss to undefeated San Francisco a few weeks ago was perhaps the exception rather than the norm. They have a chance to get to 10-6, and they'll likely need to in order to reach the playoffs.

The Panthers claimed running back Mike Davis off waivers, a league source confirmed. The former fourth-round pick out of South Carolina was released by the Chicago Bears. He will add depth behind Christian McCaffrey, who entered Sunday's game leading the league In total yards from scrimmage. Ian Rapoport first reported.

Panthers coach Ron RIvera plans to send the controversial third-down roughing the passer penalty called on Gerald McCoy in the end zone with less than 5 minutes left in the first half to the league for clarification. McCoy said the refs told him it was for putting his full weight on Aaron Rodgers. He didn't agree. Mario Addison said it was a ‘'Bullsh**'' call. It cost Carolina a potential scoring opportunity trailing 14-10.

Panthers edge rusher Mario Addison said the roughing the passer penalty on Gerald McCoy late in the first half was a ‘'bullish** call.'' McCoy said the ref told him he called it because the DE-DT put all is weight on Aaron Rodgers.

Christian McCaffrey spent a long time sitting in front of his locker after Sunday's 24-16 loss to the Packers. The Panthers running back was hard on himself for not scoring on the final play. But McCaffrey didn't let his teammates down and he kept himself in the running for NFL MVP with 141 yards from scrimmage (108 rushing, 33 receiving) and one touchdown. He has 14 touchdowns on the season, tied for the most in the league.

*Panthers coach Ron Rivera called what happened in the Browns-Steelers game last night "a truly unfortunate set of circumstances.'' He hears his players talk about it and said his players asked him what he thought about the incident, but "I don't delve into it because it's a very touchy subject.''

*The Panthers ruled cornerback Ross Cockrell (quad) out for Sunday's game against Atlanta. Corner Donte Jackson (hip) is questionable and LT Dennis Daley (groin) is doubtful. CB James Bradberry, who missed last week's game at Green Bay, is good to go as he said on Thursday.

Success against Julio Jones could pay off for Panthers' James Bradberry
James Bradberry has had some of his best efforts defending one of the NFL’s best receivers. That’s why the Panthers (5-4) are thankful he appears ready to return for Sunday’s game against Atlanta after missing last Sunday's loss in Green Bay with a groin injury.
“He’s setting himself up for that same payday [Norman got]," free safety Tre Boston said of Bradberry, a 2016 second-round pick out of Samford. Bradberry hopes so, not just because of the way he defends Jones but also the way he plays the opponent’s top receiver every week.“I wouldn’t say he completes me," Bradberry said of Jones. “But he definitely gets me going."

Jones, with 751 career receptions for 11,522 yards and 55 touchdowns, has been targeted at least 10 times vs. eight different nearest defenders around the NFL in the past four seasons. That average jumps to 13.4 against other Carolina defensive backs during that span.

Bradberry’s effectiveness against Jones was highlighted during last year’s Week 2 loss to the Falcons. Jones was coming off a 10-catch, 169-yard game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Bradberry held him to five catches on nine targets for 64 yards and no touchdowns. In their Week 6 matchup, Jones had a touchdown but was limited to four catches for 28 yards with Bradberry shadowing him. Perhaps the best example of Bradberry’s value against Jones came in 2016, Bradberry's rookie season. In the first game, Bradberry left on the first series with a toe injury and Jones had 12 catches for 300 yards and a touchdowns. Fourteen weeks later, a healthy Bradberry limited Jones to four catches for 60 yards.
