Cam conundrum: Why Newton could leave, where he could go
Newton's football story is far from at its conclusion. The aftermath of Newton's wasted year on injured reserve is sure to send ripples through the league in 2020, whether Newton stays in Carolina or starts for a new offense. Newton is staying quiet about his injury.

Ron Rivera out as Carolina coach after nine seasons
Secondary coach Perry Fewell has been named interim head coach. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner will transition to special assistant to the head coach, and quarterbacks coach Scott Turner will serve as offensive coordinator.

Rivera ended his nine-year tenure at Carolina as the winningest coach in team history, with a 76-63-1 regular season record and a 3-4 postseason mark. He was a two-time NFL Coach of the Year and took the team to Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season, but finished with only three winning seasons since taking over in 2011. He is looked at as one of the best defensive minds in the game league wide.

Week 14 NFL Power Rankings: 1-32 poll, plus who's under fire in the final month
The NFL Power Rankings looked at players, coaches and executives on the not seat in the preseason. Now that we're in the home stretch of the regular season, we figured we'd revisit this subject and see who was under fire going into the final month.

No.19: Carolina

Who's under fire: Ron Rivera, head coach: Ron Rivera went from being under fire to being fired on Tuesday. He was let go because the Panthers will miss the playoffs for the second straight season and third time in the past four seasons since reaching Super Bowl 50. They are 12-16 since David Tepper purchased the team.

Owner David Tepper on Ron Rivera firing: 'I thought it was time'
Tepper said the decision to fire Rivera now instead of letting the organization's winningest coach and a two-time NFL Coach of the Year finish the season was made so that Tepper could move forward with finding a replacement without going behind Rivera's back.

Rivera’s ouster in Carolina leaves NFL with only three full-time head coaches of color
Although Black Monday is more than four weeks away, the NFL’s head coaching ranks became whiter Tuesday with the firing of Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera. With Rivera out, Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Anthony Lynn of the Los Angeles Chargers and Brian Flores of the Miami Dolphins are the league’s remaining head coaches of color. The NFL has 32 teams.

Fired Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he 'absolutely' plans to coach again

Rivera finished as the winningest coach (76-63-1) in Carolina history. He was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2013 and '15. When he was hired in 2011, Ron Rivera told former Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson that he wanted to be a head coach for only eight to 10 years.

Cam Newton plans to have foot surgery
Newton's injury raises speculation that his future at Carolina could be over, but Tepper said that no decision has been made and wouldn't be made until Newton was healthy. He also implied that the new head coach would have a say in Cam's future. Newton. 30, has one year left on his contract. He is scheduled to count $21.1 million against the 2020 salary cap.

Greg Dortch gets a second chance to return kicks for Panthers, who promote him to the 53-man roster. Wide receiver Donte Moncrief is waived.

Interim Panthers coach Perry Fewell, who grew up not far from Charlotte, North Carolina, didn't have an NFL team to pull for as a kid so he adopted the Atlanta Falcons. He couldn't make himself like the Washington Redskins, then the most poplar team in the Carolinas. Now, in his first game coaching the Panthers, he faces the Falcons. And he got the job after the Panthers were embarrassed by the Redskins. Small world

The Panthers have ruled Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen (concussion) and left tackle Greg Litlte (ankle) out. OLB Mario Addison (groin) is questionable, but interim coach Perry Fewell expects him to play.

Panthers interim coach Perry Fewell begins his audition for the full-time position when Carolina visits Atlanta, where Falcons coach Dan Quinn's status is uncertain, on Sunday. Fewell was Carolina's secondary coach before being named interim coach. Four straight losses left the Panthers (5-7) on the brink of elimination from the playoff race and prompted Tepper to move on from Rivera so he could begin searching for the next coach.

The Falcons (3-9) have been eliminated from playoff contention. Quinn took the Falcons to the Super Bowl in 2016 and another playoff berth the following year. This season will be his second straight with a losing record. Quinn has been unable to fix such nagging problems as a poor running game, leaky protection for quarterback Matt Ryan and an inconsistent pass rush. Ryan was sacked nine times in last week's 26-18 loss to New Orleans.

The Panthers have ruled tight end Greg Olsen (concussion), LT Greg Little (ankle) and DE Marquis Haynes (knee) out for Sunday's game. Edge rusher Mario Addison (chest) appears set to go. DT Gerald McCoy is doubtful with an ankle injury.

Interim Panthers coach Perry Fewell, who grew up not far from Charlotte, will have a lot of friends and fans in the stadium for his first game at Bank of America Stadium since replacing Ron Rivera.

The Panthers returned WR Chris Hogan to the active roster from injured reserve. The roster spot was created when rookie left tackle Greg Little (ankle) was placed on injured reserve.
