Matt Rhule had a Hall of Fame cast speak to Carolina positon groups during offseason workouts. Brian Urlacher spoke to linebackers, Julius Peppers to defensive linemen, Ryan Clark to defensive backs and Joe Montana to quarterbacks. All virtually, of course.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule said he had an antibody test for COVID-19 as part of his routine physical and the result was negative. Also said he has a nice mask as the North Carolina governor mandated people must wear masks when going to public places.

Matt Rhule calls the decision for the Panthers to move on from mental health clinician Tish Guerin a personnel decision. He did not speculate on how that role would be filled. Guerin was one of the first in-house hires of her positon in the NFL.

Panthers coach Matt Rule says neither he nor his staff plan to return to the stadium until players are allowed in. Again rookies tentatively are scheduled to report on July 21.

QB Cam Newton reaches 1-year deal with Patriots, sources say

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has reached an agreement on a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the New England Patriots, league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter. ‬‪Newton now will step into the mix to try to help replace former Patriots signal-caller Tom Brady, who left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency. The Patriots did not select a quarterback in April's draft, with 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham and 11-year veteran Brian Hoyer atop the depth chart. A source familiar with the Patriots' thinking said the agreement with Newton was appealing to the team as a low-risk, high-reward situation, factoring in Newton's health, a modest contract and New England's transition at quarterback without Brady. Carolina moved on from its one-time franchise quarterback after agreeing to a contract with free agent Teddy Bridgewater to become the team's new starter. Newton continues to rehab from foot surgery and had a physical in Atlanta on March 23 that was coordinated by the Panthers and his agency, sources told Schefter. Overall, Newton has passed for 29,041 yards with 182 touchdowns and 108 interceptions and has rushed for 4,806 yards and 58 touchdowns.

Patriots can't lose with incentive-laden deal for Cam Newton

Cam Newton’s one-year, incentive-laden contract with the New England Patriots is mostly a no-lose situation in a post-Tom Brady world. So why wouldn’t the Patriots take the plunge? If Newton is healthy and performs at the high level he did when he was named NFL MVP and led the Carolina Panthers to Super Bowl 50, he could be the Patriots' starting quarterback and put them back into the conversation as one of the AFC's elite teams. If his previously injured foot doesn’t respond well or his performance and fit in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ system don’t measure up, there’s limited financial pain for the team in quickly moving on.So with Newton willing to accept what the Patriots have to offer -- a low-cost chance to battle with 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham and 11-year veteran Brian Hoyer to be Brady’s replacement -- it adds a stick of dynamite to what was already a compelling situation.

The humbling of Cam Newton

In August 2011, then-Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson appeared on the PBS program The Charlie Rose Show to discuss with the host his team’s No. 1 overall pick in that year’s NFL draft: Cam Newton. Richardson told Rose that before the draft, he spoke with Newton and asked the former Auburn quarterback if he had any tattoos or piercings. Newton responded, “No, sir, I don’t have any,” according to Richardson. The Panthers owner then told Newton, “Good. We want to keep it that way.” The Panthers selected Newton and later signed him to a four-year, $22 million contract. What probably seemed like — to the majority of the country — an innocuous statement from a 75-year-old man about the general appearance of his newest employee was just the first of many times Newton has been asked to humble himself since entering the league nine years ago.

Panthers' all-defense rookie draft class could make historic impact
As many as five players from the draft class will be in the running to be a starter. Even in 1995, the team's inaugural year, the Panthers had just four rookies start at least 50% of the games. Only eight Carolina rookies have started at least 50% of the games in the past seven seasons combined.

Carolina Panthers training camp questions: Can Matt Rhule hit the ground running?
How has a virtual offseason made an impact on first-year NFL coach Matt Rhule? What will be expected from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in his first season in Carolina? How will McCaffrey’s role and snap counts change? Will he again gain 1,000 yards receiving and rushing?

Panthers ' 53-man roster projection includes ex-XFL QB as backup
Carolina is coming off consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 2011-12, quarterback Cam Newton's first two years in the league. With Newton now at New England the task of turning things around falls into the hands of Teddy Bridgewater.

Carolina Panthers News

The Panthers coaches moved back into Bank of America Stadium today observing all the Covid-19 protocols, starting with a mask. Rookies that pass two corona tests are allowed in the stadium on Saturday for physicals. Veterans are scheduled to begin the testing procedure necessary to get into the stadium on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers are one of eight NFL teams that have their IDER (Infectious Disease Emergency Response) plan approved, according to the NFLPA. The others are Baltimore, Buffalo, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City and Miami. All 32 teams have submitted plans and they are under review.

The Panthers, who previously made DT Derrick Brown the first of the 2020 NFL first-round picks to reach an agreement, have signed their other six picks – DE Yetur Gross-Matos, S Jeremy Chinn, CB Troy Pride Jr., S Kenny Robinson, DT Bravvion Roy and CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III. They now can begin Covid-19 testing, so the earliest they could be in BOA and take physicals is Saturday.

Panthers fourth-round pick Troy Pride Jr. signs his rookie deal, his agent reported on social media. First step before first Covid-19 test as Carolina rookies begin reporting today. DT Derrick Brown was the first first-round pick to sign a while back.

Charlotte's MLS team scheduled to debut in 2021 has moved the date to 2022 due to setbacks because of Covid-19. "After a lot of discussion with Major League Soccer, we are confident it is in the best interest of our club and our supporters to take additional time to ensure a successful inaugural season," said Tom Glick, President of Tepper Sports & Entertainment. Panthers owner David Tepper owns the team.

25 years after debut, Panthers and Jaguars are back to rebuilding
Carolina got off to a faster start, winning an expansion-record seven games in 1995 and going 12-4 in the second season because of a more veteran roster. That was key for an organization building a new stadium for the 1996 season and trying to sell permanent seat licenses.
