From mentor to boss, Panthers' Matt Rhule quick to credit DC Phil Snow
Phil Snow was the defensive coordinator at UCLA in 2001 when a 26-year-old graduate assistant who'd just lost his job at the University of Buffalo called begging for a job. Snow has been working as Matt Rhule’s defensive coordinator for eight seasons between Temple, Baylor and the now the Carolina Panthers.

Panthers are taking 'F-I-O' approach to being a factor in NFC South
The Panthers (2-2) seem to have figured out how to win under the first-year coach with one of the youngest rosters in the NFL. Oddly, they have figured it out with their biggest star, running back Christian McCaffrey, out with an ankle injury.

Carolina Panthers News

Panthers coach Matt Rhule compared quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to former Giants quarterback Eli Manning in terms of his football intelligence and decision making. Who did Bridgewater grow up wanting to be like? “I wanted to be like Randy Moss, those guys scoring touchdowns,'' he said.

Analytics are a big part of what the Panthers do. Coach Matt Rhule mentioned two areas the team has improved greatly the past two games. Offensively, second- and third-down efficiency “the ability to throw the ball and move the chains has led to really long drives.'' Defensively, the lack of explosive plays given up “when people score on us they earn it.'' Both will be key against Atlanta, an explosive team that can put points on the board.

Trenton Cannon will back up Mike Davis at running back with Christian McCaffrey and now Reggie Bonnafon on injured reserve. Fullback Alex Armah also is available to play running back.

Panthers' Game Status: Out - CB Eli Apple. LT Russell Okung (groin) is scheduled to play after missing the last two games.

Josh Jacobs followed his strong rookie season by running for 93 yards and three touchdowns, Derek Carr threw for 239 yards and a score. Birdgewater replaced Cam Newton as the franchise's starting QB and finished 22 of 34 for 270 yards and one touchdown in his Carolina debut.

Week-2: L
Brady, Fournette lead Bucs over Panthers 31-17
Tom Brady got his first win with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1), throwing for 217 yards, one touchdown and an interception. With another recent acquisition, Leonard Fournette, rushing for 103 yards and two TDs. McCaffrey, who spent most of the fourth quarter on the sideline, scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards and finished with 58 yards rushing and 29 receiving on four catches.

Week-3: W
Panthers beat Chargers 21-16 for Rhule's first NFL victory
Teddy Bridgewater was 22 of 28 for 235 yards and a touchdown in his first win with Carolina (1-2). The seven-year veteran helped the Panthers snap a 10-game losing streak dating to last season. Herbert became the third quarterback since the merger to throw for 300 yards in his first two starts. The rookie was 35 of 49 for 330 yards and a touchdown, but also had a fumble and an interception.

Week-4: W
Bridgewater, Panthers fix red-zone woes, top Cardinals 31-21
Bridgewater threw for 276 yards and two scores as the Panthers solved their red-zone issues from a week ago by scoring TDs on their first four trips inside the Arizona 20-yard line. Murray threw for three touchdowns for the Cardinals (2-2), but was limited to 133 yards passing as Arizona finished with 262 yards on offense, running just 55 plays.

Week-5: W
Teddy Bridgewater and Panthers surge into tie for first in NFC South
Many wrote the Panthers off before the season after they hired a first-year NFL head coach and completely overhauled the roster, dumping quarterback Cam Newton along the way. There seemed to be no way rookie coach Matt Rhule’s team could keep pace with Drew Brees and New Orleans or Tom Brady and Tampa Bay.... Don’t look now, but the Carolina Panthers are tied for the NFC South lead.

Christian McCaffrey doesn't have to rush back for Panthers
McCaffrey is eligible to come off IR this week, but don’t look for the Panthers to activate the Pro Bowl running back for at least another week or two. They want to give the right high ankle sprain, suffered during a Week 2 loss to Tampa Bay, more time to heal.

Panthers' Kawann Short to have season-ending shoulder surgery
Short missed the final 14 games last season after suffering a partially torn rotator cuff in Week 2 against Tampa Bay. Rhule said it was not the same shoulder. Short is in the fourth of a five-year, $80 million contract he signed in 2017 after having 23.5 sacks during a three-year span.

Carolina Panthers enter enhanced coronavirus protocol after Falcons DT tests positive

The Carolina Panthers on Wednesday entered the NFL's intensive protocol after Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Marion Davidson was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The Falcons placed Davidson on the list Tuesday, two days after losing to the Panthers (3-2) in Atlanta. A source told ESPN's Vaughn McClure that Davidson tested positive for the coronavirus. The Falcons announced Wednesday evening that they also entered the NFL's intensive protocol. The intensive protocol, according to a memo sent out by the NFL on Oct. 1, requires teams potentially exposed to the coronavirus to implement the following precautions.

When Panthers protect Teddy Bridgewater, they're a different team

It began on the second play of Sunday’s 23-16 ioss to the Chicago Bears when Carolina Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was sacked for the first time since Week 3. It ended on Bridgewater’s final throw when under duress he tossed his second interception. For the Panthers (3-3) to have any hope of remaining relevant in the NFC South, they must alleviate the pressure that defenses are putting on Bridgewater. The Bears pressured Bridgewater on 13 of 40 dropbacks and sacked him four times Sunday. In Week 2, Tampa Bay pressured him 15 times and sacked him five times. Both were losses. Bridgewater began the day ranked first in the NFL in completion percentage (73.4) because his line kept him clean. He ran only 15 times in the first five games because he didn’t have to. He had a 55.2 completion percentage against the Bears and ran eight times because the pass rush was on him so fast.

Derrick Brown finally showing why Panthers made him seventh pick
In September, he began his NFL career with a 29.9 grade by Pro Football Focus that ranked him 154th out of 155 defensive linemen after two games. He didn’t win any of his 27 pass-rushes and wasn’t much of a factor in stopping the run, which was his forte coming out of Auburn.

How Teddy Bridgewater's Saints days made him Panthers' No. 1 choice
Long before Teddy Bridgewater was introduced to then offensive assistant Joe Brady with the New Orleans Saints, long before the Carolina Panthers' personnel department made Bridgewater the player to replace franchise quarterback Cam Newton, the former Louisville star was on coach Matt Rhule’s radar.

Can Panthers' Teddy Bridgewater exploit his knowledge of the Saints?
No one expected this veteran Saints team to be just a half-game up on a Panthers squad that was overhauled from top to bottom this offseason.
