Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey won't play Thursday vs. Atlanta Falcons

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey will not get a prime-time return from a high ankle sprain. The Panthers (3-4) decided not to activate McCaffrey for Thursday night's nationally televised game against the Atlanta Falcons (1-6), meaning his likely return will be next week against the Kansas City Chiefs. McCaffrey returned to practice Monday and on Tuesday was given a designation to return from injured reserve. But because it was a short week and McCaffrey didn't get to go through a full practice, the team opted to exercise caution. Where McCaffrey might have helped the most is the running game in the red zone, where Carolina ranks 27th in the NFL in percentage of touchdowns. He scored four rushing touchdowns in the first two games. Davis had only two in five games.

Week-3: Carolina at Baltimore *
Week-4: Pittsburgh at Carolina *

Regular Season
Week-1: L
Jacobs runs for 3 TDs as Raiders hold off Panthers 34-30
Josh Jacobs followed his strong rookie season by running for 93 yards and three touchdowns, Derek Carr threw for 239 yards and a score. Birdgewater replaced Cam Newton as the franchise's starting QB and finished 22 of 34 for 270 yards and one touchdown in his Carolina debut.

Week-2: L
Brady, Fournette lead Bucs over Panthers 31-17
Tom Brady got his first win with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1), throwing for 217 yards, one touchdown and an interception. With another recent acquisition, Leonard Fournette, rushing for 103 yards and two TDs. Teddy Bridgewater was 33 of 42 for 367 yards and two interceptions for the Panthers (0-2), who had four turnovers. McCaffrey, who spent most of the fourth quarter on the sideline, scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards and finished with 58 yards rushing and 29 receiving on four catches.

Week-3: W
Panthers beat Chargers 21-16 for Rhule's first NFL victory
Teddy Bridgewater was 22 of 28 for 235 yards and a touchdown in his first win with Carolina (1-2). The seven-year veteran helped the Panthers snap a 10-game losing streak dating to last season. Herbert became the third quarterback since the merger to throw for 300 yards in his first two starts. The rookie was 35 of 49 for 330 yards and a touchdown, but also had a fumble and an interception.

Week-4: W
Bridgewater, Panthers fix red-zone woes, top Cardinals 31-21
Bridgewater threw for 276 yards and two scores as the Panthers solved their red-zone issues from a week ago by scoring TDs on their first four trips inside the Arizona 20-yard line. Murray threw for three touchdowns for the Cardinals (2-2), but was limited to 133 yards passing as Arizona finished with 262 yards on offense, running just 55 plays.

Week-5: W
Panthers surge into tie for first in NFC South, beating the Falcons 23-16
Many wrote the Panthers off before the season after they hired a first-year NFL head coach and completely overhauled the roster, dumping quarterback Cam Newton along the way. There seemed to be no way rookie coach Matt Rhule’s team could keep pace with Drew Brees and New Orleans or Tom Brady and Tampa Bay. Don’t look now, but the Carolina Panthers are tied for the NFC South lead.

Week-6: L
Red zone woes keep Panthers from extending win streak against Bears
The Panthers (3-3) made the Bears' defense look even better, particularly in the first half where they walked away from two drives inside the 5-yard line with field goals after Sunday's 23-16 loss.

Week-7: L
Panthers fall short again 27-24 to Saints despite Teddy Bridgewater's heroics
Bridgewater finished 23 for 28 for 254 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. That left Joey Slye trying to make NFL history with a 65-yard field goal. It fell inches short.

Week-8: L
Ryan, Falcons avenge earlier loss to Panthers, 25-17
The Falcons (2-6) have had a penchant for squandering leads, coming into the game 1/3 when leading entering the fourth quarter. Matt Ryan threw for 281 yards and ran for a touchdown, Younghoe Koo made four field goals. Bridgewater was limited to 176 yards passing as the Panthers (3-5) lost their third straight game without injured Christian McCaffrey.

Week-9: Sun, Nov 8
Carolina at Kansas City

Panthers back to playing like a rebuilding team in loss to Falcons
The Panthers (3-5) couldn’t beat an Atlanta team that couldn’t beat anybody -- the Falcons lost six of their first seven games. Atlanta was 1-3 when holding a fourth-quarter lead entering the game and in a state of flux after firing coach Dan Quinn after a Week 5 loss to Carolina.

Panthers will have to fight through as schedule turns tougher
The Panthers likely will be a double-digit underdog at Kansas City, and they will be underdogs in most of their final eight games after losing to an Atlanta team that entered Thursday with the fifth-worst defense in the NFL.

Carolina Panthers' Christian McCaffrey not expected to play Sunday
McCaffrey didn't miss a game during his first three NFL seasons, including last year, when he became the third player in league history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season.

Panthers rookie Jeremy Chinn harder to replace than Christian McCaffrey
Carolina had to rotate multiple players into the lineup in last Sunday’s 33-31 loss to Kansas City to duplicate everything Chinn does. He was out with a knee injury and is expected to return to the starting lineup this week.
