I have a dream speech transcript - Martin Luther King Jr.

One of the most iconic and famous speeches of all time, Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. Read the full transcript of this classic speech. Martin Luther King’s famous speech was so powerful because he described a peaceful and racially integrated world completely at odds with reality in the U.S. South at the time. Looking back years later, some context is helpful to understand exactly what he was saying and why it was so revolutionary. Speaking during the march on Washington, D.C. in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. claims that African Americans have come to the nation's capital to cash "a promissory note," a note that must be honored or there will be no tranquility in America. The purpose of Marin Luther King Jr's speech was that for freedom and jobs for the colored folks. When MLKJ delivered the speech, African Americans didn't have much freedom. He explained that if there was no racial justice between colored and white people, life wouldn't be peaceful.

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. The time is always right to do what is right.
It’s all right to tell a man to lift himself by his own bootstraps, but it is cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps.

King was assassinated in 1968, but his words and legacy continue to resonate for all those seeking justice in the United States and around the world. As King said at the Washington National Cathedral on March 31, 1968, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Declassified FBI files reveal that MLK led a very different life from a religious leader should. In 1968, King had received funding from the Ford Foundation to sponsor workshops for African-American ministers in Florida. The documents show that the pastor participated in orgiastic events with other activists. “A black minister who attended later expressed his distaste for the drinking, fornication and homosexuality behind the scenes that occurred at the conference,” it reads.
