An Orange man faces charges after punching a police officer and threatening to kill the officer’s family members and force the officer to watch as he ate them.
Jeffrey R. Liimatainen, 26, pleaded not guilty in Orange District Court on Friday to charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, threatening to commit a crime (wit murder), and possession of a Class E drug. He was released on personal recognizance.
Liimatainen reportedly made the threat while being transferred to the Franklin County House of Corrections after throwing a boot at Orange Police Officer Adam R. Cooley and punching him in the chest.
According to court documents, Cooley was dispatched to an address on West River Street at roughly 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 on a report of a woman who wanted her intoxicated son removed from her home. Cooley and Officer Jonathan Cole arrived and spoke with Liimatainen. Cooley noted Liimatainen’s had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. When a friend declined to take in Liimatainen for the night, Cooley placed Liimatainen in protective custody.
After arriving at the police station, Liimatainen reportedly told police he was going to fight the officers and run away. Police found gabapentin pills and naproxen sodium pills in Liimatainen’s pockets and Liimatainen said he had a prescription for them. Police say Liimatainen got aggressive when told he was being moved to the Franklin County House of Correction and threw one of his boots at Cooley, missing the officer by a few feet. Liimatainen reportedly punched Cooley in the chest when he and Officer Travis Rushford tried to handcuff his remaining free hand, and Liimatainen was then arrested.
Liimatainen is said to have started spitting in the booking room and when he was asked why he was doing that, he replied that there was nowhere else to spit. While being transferred to Greenfield, Liimatainen told Cooley he was going to find the officer’s address and tie him up before killing and eating his entire family while the officer watched.
“(Liimatainen) also continued to spit all over the back seat of the cruiser, because once again, there was nowhere else to spit,” the documents state.
A pretrial conference is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2018.
