MVP Miles Bridges leads U.S. over World in Rising Stars Challenge

Miles Bridges soared like his boss in Chicago. Zion Williamson delivered his share of punishing dunks, even damaging the rim. It all added up to a high-flying start to the NBA's All-Star Weekend. Bridges scored 20 points and took MVP honors, Eric Paschall added 23, and the U.S. beat the World 151-131 in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday night. The annual showcase of the top rookies and second-year players helped tip off the first All-Star Weekend in the Windy City since 1988, when Jordan dazzled the home crowd at the old Chicago Stadium. Back then, "His Airness" edged Dominique Wilkins in a slam dunk contest that arguably remains the standard and scored 40 points to lead the East over the West in the All-Star Game.

Derrick Jones Jr. edges Aaron Gordon in controversial dunk contest

Buddy Hield edges Devin Booker on final shot to win 3-point shootout
Hield chose to dedicate his victory to the people who died during Hurricane Dorian last fall, and told ESPN's Rachel Nichols afterward that he hoped it could deliver something positive to the people in his homeland still recovering from the storm.

NBA All-Star Game MVP award named in honor of Kobe Bryant

The award will be named after Bryant from now on, with it being handed out first at Sunday's All-Star Game. Until this point, it had not been named after anyone. Bryant made his All-Star Game debut in 1998 at the age of 19, making him the youngest player to play in the league's midseason showcase.

The Los Angeles Lakers legend holds the NBA record for consecutive All-Star selections with 18 straight, from 1998 through 2016 (there was no All-Star Game in 1999 because of the NBA lockout).

Kawhi Leonard scores 30, goes 8-for-14 on 3-pointers to win MVP

The 2020 All-Star Game saw Kawhi Leonard win the first Kobe Bryant MVP award and saw both teams honor the late Los Angeles Lakers legend in the most fitting fashion: by playing hard to the last second. Under the new "Elam Ending" rule instituted this season, with the game ending when one team reached a specific final score, the game ended when Chicago native Anthony Davis sank the second of two free throws to lift Team LeBron to a 157-155 victory over Team Giannis at the United Center. The format change provided all the drama the league could have hoped for, with the final few possessions leaving the crowd hanging on every bounce of the ball and players on both teams playing the untimed fourth quarter full-bore. Given Bryant's legendary competitive streak, it came as little surprise that players on both sides went all-out in a game centered on honoring his legacy.

All-Star Game remembers Kobe Bryant with tributes from Magic, Jennifer Hudson, Common

The tributes to the late Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna began well before Sunday night's All-Star Game at the United Center. Before the players were announced and the game tipped off, the lights went down, and Hall of Famer Magic Johnson took center stage to make a speech honoring the Lakers legend. "We'll never see another basketball player quite like Kobe," said Johnson, who also paid tribute to David Stern, the late NBA commissioner emeritus. "Scoring 81 points in one game. Scoring 60 points in his last game. And then winning five NBA championships. Johnson led the crowd -- which chanted "Kobe! Kobe!'' -- in an eight-second moment of silence in a nod to the number Bryant wore the first half of his career. Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson, wearing a dress in the Lakers' deep purple team color, performed "For All We Know (We May Never Meet Again)" as images of Bryant flashed on a screen behind the stage.
