NHL adopts 24-team playoff if season returns

The NHL will abandon the rest of the regular season and go straight into the playoffs with 24 teams instead of 16 if it is able to resume play, commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday. "As we seek some return to normalcy, this is an important day for NHL fans," Bettman said of the Return To Play Plan. "Since March 12, we've been hopeful and optimistic that by developing all options and alternatives, we could get to this point. I know I join sports fans everywhere when I say we cannot wait for the players to hit the ice again." Bettman said the goal is to hold an 82-game season in 2020-21. While the players and the NHL have agreed on a format, the NHL Players' Association has not formally approved any actual return to finish the season. The league and the NHLPA also must still figure out health and safety protocols and solve other issues, including where to play.

Goodbye, pass interference replay review:
Lessons learned from the NFL's failed officiating experiment

The NFL's half-baked idea to review pass interference is dead. The rule failed so miserably, in the words of league executive vice president Troy Vincent, that it won't so much as appear on the agenda for an owners conference call Thursday to vote on rule proposals.Writing its epitaph should be quick and easy. Addressing the still-present problem, and the core ineffectiveness it revealed, is a more difficult task, one that will be addressed by a new leadership team that is still forming. "At the end of the day," ESPN officiating analyst John Parry said, "the NFL does not have a safety net to fix a game-changing egregious miss heading into the 2020 season. That can't be in today's world." That's why coaches have long advocated for a sky judge with wide-ranging latitude to help, rather than making incremental additions to replay review. Even as he supported last season's rule, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton predicted a long-term future with sky judges making real-time judgments and corrections.

President Donald Trump reopens anthem debate with tweet aimed at Roger Goodell
In response to commissioner Roger Goodell's video last week in which he said the NFL erred in how it dealt with player protests of police brutality and systemic racism, President Donald Trump tweeted late Sunday night, reopening the national anthem debate with the league. The tweet read: "Could it be even remotely possible that in Roger Goodell's rather interesting statement of peace and reconciliation, he was intimating that it would now be O.K. for the players to KNEEL, or not to stand, for the National Anthem, thereby disrespecting our Country & our Flag?"

Cardinals' Kyler Murray latest to commit to kneeling during anthem in 2020

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray didn't hesitate when asked whether he'll kneel during the national anthem this season. "Yeah, I'll be kneeling," said Murray, echoing similar sentiments shared by fellow players Adrian Peterson and Baker Mayfield and Texans coach Bill O'Brien, among others, in recent weeks. "I stand for what's right and that's the bottom line. I call it like I see it, and what's been going on is completely wrong, so I'll definitely be taking a knee." Murray, the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, has embraced his platform as a star black quarterback in the NFL and understands his voice is one that will be listened to. Murray said he doesn't feel any pressure with that.

Statue of former Redskins owner George Preston Marshall removed from RFK Stadium

The statue of former Washington Redskins owner George Preston Marshall, who was forced to integrate his franchise in the early 1960s, was removed outside of RFK Stadium on Friday morning. Events DC, which is in charge of RFK Stadium, removed the statue. Max Brown, the chairman of the Events DC board of directors, and Greg O'Dell, the president and CEO, released a joint statement explaining the removal.
