Perkins has 5 TDs, leads Virginia past North Carolina 38-31

Howell was 15 of 29 for 353 yards and four touchdowns for North Carolina. Dyami Brown had six catches for a career-high 202 yards and three touchdowns for the Tar Heels. Eight of North Carolina's nine games have been decided by seven points or fewer, and the Tar Heels are 3-5 in those games. North Carolina (4-5, 3-3)) play at Pittsburgh (6-3, 3-2), whom they've beaten six consecutive times, in a Thursday night game on Nov. 14

.
Virginia limped in with losses in three of its last four games. Thanks to a huge night from their quarterback and a couple of timely stops, the Cavaliers are now in control of their division. Perkins threw three touchdown passes and ran for 112 yards and two scores as the Cavaliers (6-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) took over sole possession of first place in the ACC's Coastal Division. They also became bowl-eligible for the third consecutive season.

Pickett accounts for 3 TDs, Pitt edges UNC 34-27 in OT
Pickett threw for 359 yards and a touchdown and added 53 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. The Panthers (7-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) ended a six-game losing streak against the Tar Heels when North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell threw incomplete on fourth-and-16. Pitt, which entered the game second in the country in sacks, got to Howell five times, including a sack by Jaylen Twyman that pushed the Tar Heels back to fourth-and-long in overtime.

Howell finished 27 of 43 for 322 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for North Carolina as the Tar Heels (4-6, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) rallied twice in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Antonio Williams ran for 107 yards and Dazz Newsome caught 11 passes for 170 and a touchdown. All seven meetings between the schools as conference rivals have been decided by a touchdown or less. The Tar Heels welcome Mercer in their home finale on Nov. 23.

UNC defeats NC State 41-10 to become bowl-eligible

Mack Brown has North Carolina headed back to a bowl game in the first year of his second stint as the Tar Heels' coach after freshman Sam Howell's career-best 401 yards passing Saturday night sparked a 41-10 win over rival N.C. State. After a costly first-half interception, Howell threw three second-half touchdown passes as UNC overcame a 10-6 halftime deficit with 28 third-quarter points. The Tar Heels (6-6, 4-4 ACC) intercepted Devin Leary twice and recovered a Zonovan Knight fumble in the third quarter, when Javone Williams ran for two scores and caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Howell.

Becoming bowl-eligible was a sweet accomplishment for a team that went 2-9 in 2018 under Larry Fedora, who was replaced by Brown after the season. Brown, who coached the Tar Heels to a 74-52-1 record from 1988 to 1997, saw this year's team surpass UNC's total number of wins from 2017 and 2018 combined while all six Tar Heel losses were by seven points or fewer. UNC: Becoming bowl-eligible gives the program momentum and an opportunity to get valuable extra practice time with the new coaching staff. A lopsided win in the state rivalry game also could give the Tar Heels a recruiting edge after losing four of their previous five games against N.C. State.

Military Bowl Presented by Northrop Grumman: North Carolina (6-6) vs. Temple (8-4)
Dec. 27 (Noon on ESPN at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland)

North Carolina expected a bowl trip to Annapolis, but rather than playing a true road game against Navy, the Tar Heels get a Temple team led by a very strong defense. This should be another good test for UNC freshman quarterback Sam Howell, who has 3,347 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. Temple coach Rod Carey went 0-6 in bowl games at Northern Illinois. Mack Brown is 13-8 in bowls.

Mack Brown gets 1-year extension as North Carolina coach

North Carolina agreed to a one-year extension with coach Mack Brown on Saturday, keeping Brown on the sideline at Chapel Hill through the 2024 season. Brown led the Tar Heels to a 6-6 mark (4-4 in the ACC Coastal) in the first season of his second stint with North Carolina. UNC will play Temple in the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman on Dec. 27. It's the first bowl game for the Tar Heels since 2016. "Mack's return has had an outstanding impact -- not just in Kenan Stadium, but throughout the Carolina community,'' athletics director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. Said Brown: "North Carolina is a wonderful place, and everyone can tell we're building something special here."

NEW AGE POSTING

Having guided North Carolina to a winning season and a lopsided bowl victory in his first year back at the school, Mack Brown has raised expectations -- for himself and the fans moving forward. The veteran coach wouldn't have it any other way. Freshman Sam Howell threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns in addition to catching a TD pass, and the Tar Heels blew out Temple. Howell completed 25 of 34 passes and ran for 53 yards on three carries to help the Tar Heels (7-6) secure their first bowl victory since 2013. North Carolina was 4-6 before winning its last two regular-season games to qualify for a bowl bid.

North Carolina went 3-9 in 2017 and 2-9 last year before hiring Brown, who coached the Tar Heels from 1988-97 prior to heading to Texas for a 16-year stay. Coming off a five-year absence from coaching, Brown -- with help from Howell -- quickly turned the program around. Howell threw 38 touchdown passes this season, most by a true freshman in FBS history. His 3,641 yards passing are an Atlantic Coast Conference record for a freshman who has not redshirted.
