The Complete History Of The XFL

The XFL was first introduced and officially created on February 2, 2000 at a news conference in New York City by Vince McMahon and then-chairman of NBC Sports, Dick Ebersol. They pushed the concept as a more Y alternative to the NFL. Originally, six teams were announced for the league but at a later date two more teams were announced. Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, New York, San Francisco, and Washington were the first six teams that were announced. At a later date, Miami and Washington were taken out and were switched to Birmingham, Memphis, Chicago, and Las Vegas, making the total number of teams to eight.

The biggest surprise of The XFL was the nicknames on the back of players’ jerseys. The name “He Hate Me” would be the most popular and most talked about name in the entire XFL. According to sources and fans, the sloppy play, boring announcers, and wrestling kind of feeling would soon doom the league. Attendance and merchandise sales were extremely successful at first, but quickly died down as well.

XFL Championship Game 2023: Score, live updates for D.C. Defenders vs. Arlington Renegades

After 40 regular-season games and two playoff semifinals, the 2023 XFL season comes down to this: One last battle to decide who'll be crowned champion.

The D.C. Defenders and Arlington Renegades took very different paths to the XFL Championship Game (although we did have them ranked 1-2 in the preseason power rankings). The Defenders have been the team to beat from the opening kickoff, losing only once all year. The Renegades' road was full of bumps, including a regular season where they finished just 4-6 but managed a fortunate playoff berth due to being in a weak division, before pulling off a playoff stunner.

Now D.C. and Arlington meet for the second time starting at 8 p.m. ET tonight. The good news for the Renegades is that the first one was actually close -- the Defenders prevailed 28-26 in overtime in Week 9. So what will happen when they meet for the title? The Defenders -- led by quarterback Jordan Ta'amu and the XFL's leading rusher, Abram Smith -- are 6.5-point favorites via Caesars Sportsbook, but as we saw just last month, Arlington quarterback and Luis Perez and company could provide a scare.

Renegades upset Defenders to claim improbable XFL title

The Arlington Renegades, led by quarterback Luis Perez, captured the XFL championship by upsetting the D.C. Defenders 35-26 to complete their improbable run Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Renegades entered the playoffs with a losing record (4-6) but managed to win the championship against a Defenders team that went 10-1. Perez carried the Renegades' offense as he went 26-for-36 for 288 yards with three touchdowns. He was named the game's MVP. Once the postseason arrived, the Renegades flipped the switch, starting in the South Division championship. They upset the No. 1-seeded Houston Roughnecks as Perez threw for 289 yards and three touchdown passes.

2023 XFL lessons from Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Dany Garcia

Perhaps the most notable accomplishment of the XFL's season is it will conclude this weekend with no questions about its immediate future. The 2001 version of the league folded within weeks after its season ended. In 2020, the league suspended play at midseason because of the COVID-19 pandemic and soon entered bankruptcy. Under new ownership in 2023, however, the XFL has played a full 40-game regular season.
