I don't know about subtle, but it was years before I realised a piece of the action was a dig at the bible.
 
I think the good episodes of TOS all hold up well but the bad episodes are unwatchable (I defy anyone to get through 'The Lights Of Zetar' or whatever it was called.)

I read the comic adapation of Harlan Ellison's version. They never would have been able to get all that into an episode (they coudln't even afford the "city on the edge of forever" part in the actual episode.)

I took it as she didn't want to tell the humans she was nearly 200 years old.
 
T'Pol is canonically 65 in S2.
 
I downloaded Dear Doctor and Home. At least one of those is good.
