Suns Owner Robert Sarver Suspended 1 Year, Probe Finds He Used N-Word

Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver was just hit with a massive penalty after an extensive investigation into alleged workplace misconduct ... getting banned from the league for one season and forced to pay a $10 million fine. The NBA released the findings of its investigation after interviewing 320 current and former Suns employees ... and determined Sarver said the N-word at least five times "when recounting the statements of others." It's worth noting -- the league says Sarver's use of the N-word was not motivated by racial hate or prejudice. The league also concluded Sarver did not treat female employees equally and made inappropriate comments about their appearance. The NBA also states Sarver engaged in inappropriate physical conduct toward male employees.

In order to combat this racial slur, we need to get to the core issue - black usage of the N word.

Listen to any rap / thug music and the lyrics are replete with the N word. Moreover, black individuals frequently refer to one ANOTHER as the N word.

If the black man / woman normalizes the use of the word, it desensitizes white persons to the deeply painful implications of the slur.

While we understand the black peoples have adopted the slur in defiance, the fact of the matter is - if we want to stamp out the usage of the N word, we've got to get started at the grassroots level.

Namely - lower socioeconomic black communities.

If we are to fine this coach person $10 million, then a proportional fine ought to be placed on any black person caught using the slur e.g. for a poorer black family (where the word is most likely to be uttered), then a fine of $200 per individual - per utterance of the N word - seems entirely fair.

NBA board of governors approves sale of Suns, Mercury to Mat Ishbia

The NBA board of governors has approved the sale of the Phoenix Suns and the WNBA's Mercury to billionaire mortgage lender Mat Ishbia, the NBA announced Monday night. Ishbia was approved as the Suns' new governor by a 29-0 vote, league sources said, with the Cleveland Cavaliers abstaining from the vote. Ishbia is buying a 57% controlling stake for $2.28 billion, sources said, with Robert Sarver selling his 37% stake for $1.48 billion. Even after taxes, Sarver is expected to clear nearly double the amount that he and a group paid for the team in 2004 -- then a record $401 million from former Suns owner Jerry Colangelo. Sarver sold the team and the Phoenix Mercury in the wake of a 10-month NBA investigation into his conduct as a s owner. That investigation came after a 2021 ESPN report that centered on Sarver's conduct during his tenure as majority owner, which began in 2004.

Sources: Ex-Suns owner Robert Sarver giving $20K to team employees

Former Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver is giving a $20,000 individual bonus to many team employees and is also donating $5 million to the team's charity, sources told ESPN on Thursday. In total, Ishbia bought a 57% controlling stake of the Suns for $2.28 billion, sources said, with Sarver personally selling his 37% stake to Ishbia for $1.48 billion. After taxes, Sarver is expected to clear nearly double the amount that he and a group paid for the team in 2004 -- then a record $401 million from former Suns owner Jerry Colangelo. Suns employees were notified about the bonuses and Sarver's donation to charity in an email from Ishbia on Thursday morning. Those who qualified for the $20,000 bonus, which they'd receive in their next paycheck, were full-time employees who started on or before Feb. 15, 2022. Between 250 and 300 employees will be impacted by the bonus, sources said.
