The attorney for Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder reiterated Monday that Snyder would not testify before Congress on June 22, despite a request from the committee to reconsider. Karen Patton Seymour declined the initial invitation from the House Oversight Committee investigating the Commanders' alleged "toxic workplace culture," saying that Snyder had a "longstanding Commanders-related business conflict" and is out of the country at the end of June. The House Committee on Oversight and Reform accepted Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder's offer to testify via video conference on July 28, but said he could not do it voluntarily as his attorney had requested. In a letter Tuesday from Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-New York) to Snyder's attorney, Karen Patton Seymour, the committee said it would accept his testimony only under a subpoena. The committee reissued a subpoena for Snyder and gave his attorney a noon deadline on Wednesday to accept. The committee had first issued a subpoena on June 24 for a deposition six days later, but that subpoena was not accepted. Maloney wrote that the committee wants Snyder to testify under a subpoena to ensure that his "testimony will be full and complete and will not be restricted in the way it would be if the deposition were conducted voluntarily."

Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder testified before Congress on Thursday after evading requests and subpoenas for more than a month. Snyder spoke before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform for more than 10 hours virtually over Zoom, according to a committee spokesperson, where he answered questions regarding the committee's investigation into workplace misconduct within the Commanders' organization. Snyder's deposition was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. ET and didn't end until 6:30 p.m. ET. Snyder and the Commanders have been subject to a congressional investigation since October following the NFL's internal probe into allegations of a hostile workplace environment within Snyder's organization. Reports of sexual misconduct were also among the allegations in the initial bombshell story from the Washington Post in 2020 that shed light on the situation in Washington. The NFL's investigation ended with a $10 million fine and Snyder giving up day-to-day control of the team to his wife.

D.C. attorney general plans to take action on Daniel Snyder, Commanders
The office of D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine (D) has nearly completed its investigation of the Washington Commanders and their owner, Daniel Snyder, and is planning to take further action in the case, according to a person familiar with the investigation. Racine and his team “are moving full steam ahead,” according to that person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, adding: “Dan Snyder, the Commanders, and the NFL will soon face accountability for their actions. ... Snyder will no longer be able to dodge subpoenas or avoid testifying or answering questions.” It is not clear what actions are being contemplated by Racine’s office, which includes more than 700 attorneys and staff members and is responsible for enforcing D.C. law through criminal and civil means.

For the first time, an NFL owner publicly has called for serious consideration to remove Washington's Dan Snyder from NFL ownership. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay held an explosive interview scrum at the fall meetings and called Snyder's missteps as owner, particularly with workplace misconduct, "gravely concerning." "I believe there is merit to removing him as owner of the [Commanders]," Irsay said from the hotel lobby of the Conrad New York Downtown. "There's consideration that he should be removed." The league requires 24 of 32 owners to approve such a vote, which never has been done at the NFL level. Irsay said that no vote will take place at Tuesday's meetings and that owners need to hear more about where the investigation stands.

Either way, the result will be the same: Snyder several billion dollars richer and someone else owning the Commanders. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was the only one to publicly call out Snyder on Tuesday and acknowledge the damage he’s been done to all 32 teams. But make no mistake, Irsay was saying what other owners, probably many of them, are thinking and, in the process, sent Snyder the message that it’s time for him to go.
