Personally, I think Pike's hair is a transporter accident.

Is this real life?
I’m not sure if I like that they didn’t explain the cause, but it is novel. I guess a scientific explanation might take the edge off of how spooky it was.
Definitely unsettling.
I also wondered about the shot of George in space. I guess Kirk could still see him a bit at that point, unless he was in the lift already? It seemed a bit unnecessary to me, like the long closing shot of the dinosaurs last week. Did they have extra budget to spend? We knew he was dead already when his intestines got sucked (sorry, “blown”) out.
Definitely unsettling.

Oh yeah, another scary episode that’s made more creepy because the location is a sister ship/station where things have gone very wrong.
An evil version of “If Wishes were Horses...”. Makes sense.

4.3 - If this had been an episode of Lower Decks it would have been 22 minutes long and probably funnier. LIke, yeah, there were some funny parts: Una singing 'Total Eclipse of The Heart' in Klingon, the incredibly dumb but somehow funny reveal that Spock is seeing Ortegas and Scotty as plants, and a third example. Scotty and Ortegas making friends was nice. Was it enough to justify spending 10% of the season on, especially when we know there's a puppet episode coming up? In my GRUMPY opinion: no. It wasn't shit like '2 and a Half Vulcans' or anything but I'd have preferred something else.
I really don't like what they're doing with La'an this season. I know this was a comedy episode but I don't really have faith (of the heart) that they'll handle her better when it goes back to "normal."
I don't really get what Chapel's story was? She smashed a glass on the Enterprise then she got all intense playing bingo?
Doohan lost his middle finger so I wish they'd had Scotty lose the same to really make the reference work (ULTIMATE NIT-PICKING.)

I am, of course, behind and playing catch-up, but here I am after the Season 4 opener. OLD NEWS to you lot, but I'll lay my thoughts out briefly.
Umm. It was alright? Convoluted? Very. But it was still good to be back with this show and this crew.
The whole classic Jurassic Park-style T. rex thing did feel a bit throwbacky to me. I know the whole feathered T. rex thing is nowhere near as settled as people sometimes make out, but given how much our picture of dinosaurs has changed over the last few decades, it would've been cool to see them take a swing at something a little less familiar than basically giving us Rexy again. We've seen it so many times. They could've got that model off the shelf at Sketchfab.
And when I say convoluted, I do mean it. This was definitely one of those episodes where, if you squint too hard at the mechanics, the seams start to unravel. There is A LOT going on here.
That said, I actually quite like how old-school pulp sci-fi the whole thing is. Ancient Martians, a lost fifth planet where the asteroid belt should be, dinosaurs, predestination paradoxes... it's throwing a lot of very old science-fiction ideas into the pot, and I think some of that throwback feeling is probably intentional. Pike having A Princess of Mars sitting there is hardly subtle.
Cassell was a bit too monologue-heavy for me, but there was an actually interesting Trek dilemma buried in all of it, which I appreciated, even if the route they took to get there was still convoluted as hell.
I do appreciate a proper high-concept science-fiction story like this, even if it didn't hit the mark everywhere. You've got to give them props when they actually lean into the kinds of stories Star Trek can accommodate really well, rather than trying to make it resemble other things all the time. It got a bit silly last season.
Looking forward to catching up with you guys over the next few days.
