QB Trevor Lawrence signs $36.8 million rookie contract with Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence signed his four-year rookie contract Monday, clearing the way for him to attend the start of training camp in three weeks. Under the NFL's rookie slotting system, Lawrence's deal was projected to be worth $36.8 million and included a $24.1 million signing bonus. He will count $6.7 million against the salary cap in 2021. The contract also includes a fifth-year option that is attached to every rookie deal for first-round selections. Lawrence is expected to be an immediate starter in Year 1. He went 34-2 at Clemson, recording the third-best winning percentage by a starting quarterback (minimum 30 starts) in college football since 1978. He finished his college career undefeated in regular-season play and led the Tigers to the national championship as a freshman in 2018.

The New Orleans Saints doubled up on first-round picks in this year's NFL draft, while the Philadelphia Eagles pushed one of their three first-rounders back into 2023 as a result of a blockbuster trade on Monday. In the trade, the Saints received two 2022 first-round picks (No. 16 and No. 19) and a 2022 sixth-round pick (No. 194) while the Eagles received a 2022 first-round pick (No. 18), a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick, plus 2022 third-round (No. 101) and seventh-round selections (No. 237). After the trade, the Eagles will still pick twice in the 2022 first round, they also own the No. 15 pick.

How does a GM know if they are ready for the NFL draft?
NFL personnel departments spend the year putting together a draft board they'll largely use for only three days in April.They take hundreds of names, thousands of hours of evaluation, more than a little hearty debate, piles of airplane tickets, interviews, miles traveled to practices and games, and it's all tossed into a blender of sorts to find the line, the line between doing all of the due diligence that can be done and information overload. The tough part is few, if any, personnel executives in the NFL rose to the job without digging for and working through as much information about players as they could find. They like -- no they love -- information. They covet and cherish good information, and the success in getting it can often determine how a draft class looks three or four seasons after it was selected.

25 NFL drafts ago, no quarterback went in Round 1: Why it might never happen again
It seems almost unthinkable now. The stuff of football legend, a Sasquatch story folks with gray around the temples tell once in a while and they simply swear it is true no matter what you've heard before. In 1996, no quarterback was selected in the first round of the NFL draft. It was only the fifth time it has happened since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger and it has not happened since. In 2020, Joe Burrow was the first selection of the draft and four quarterbacks were picked in the first round. Three quarterbacks went in the first round in 2019, five in 2018, three in 2017 and on and on. In the 25 drafts since 1996 a quarterback hasn't been the No. 1 selection just six times.
