2024 NBA finals:big questions ahead ofmaverick-celtics​

The 64-win Boston Celtics, behind the most efficient offense in NBA history, have lost only twice during the playoffs and are led by the play of Jayson Tatum and Eastern Conference finals MVP Jaylen Brown. - The fifth-seeded Dallas Mavericks, meanwhile, solidified their claim as the biggest winner of the trade deadline. 2024 NBA playoffs bracket, schedule, scores: Mavericks will face Celtics in NBA Finals​


The Dallas Mavericks are heading to the 2024 NBA Finals, where they'll meet the Boston Celtics. The Mavs ousted the Minnesota Timberwolves 124-103 on Thursday to win the Western Conference finals in five games. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving shined for Dallas, pushing the franchise back to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011. The Celtics will host NBA Finals Game 1 on Thursday, June 6, after sweeping the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals. Boston won the East for the second time in three years, and Jaylen Brown was named Eastern Conference finals MVP. The Mavericks are looking for their second title in franchise history and their first since 2011. The Celtics, meanwhile, have won 17 NBA titles, but none since 2008. Regardless of which of teams wins the 2024 title, the NBA will have its sixth different champion in six years,something that has not happened since 1975-1980.

Celtics' Kristaps Porzingis 'getting better' ahead of NBA Finals​


Kristaps Porzingis participated in parts of Friday's practice -- the Boston Celtics' first since advancing to the NBA Finals earlier this week -- and coach Joe Mazzulla said he's pleased with the center's recovery from a right calf strain. Porzingis has been out for more than four weeks since suffering the injury during Game 4 of the first-round playoff series against the Miami Heat Although Porzingis is a key cog at both ends of the court, the Celtics have still been able to go 9-1 without him, dispatching the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers to return to the Finals for the second time in three seasons. Porzingis has averaged 20.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game this season. He has shot a career-best 51.6% overall while hitting 37.5% of his 3-pointers on more than five attempts per game.

Celtics' Jayson Tatum views NBA Finals return as second chance​


After coming up short in his first trip to the NBA Finals two years ago, Celtics star Jayson Tatum says he views this return to the league's championship round as a second chance at achieving his ultimate goal as a player. Playing through a wrist injury in the 2022 Finals, Tatum averaged 21.5 points but shot 31.5% from 2-point range, including going 6-for-18 from the field in a Game 6 loss at TD Garden as the Golden State Warriors went on to celebrate their fourth championship of the Stephen Curry era on Boston's home floor.

It has taken two years for the Celtics to get a chance to avenge that result, after losing in seven games in the 2023 Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat -- again seeing their season end at home in Boston. Tatum sprained his ankle in the opening moments of that loss, helping prevent Boston from becoming the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven playoff series.

NBA Finals: What to expect in Celtics-Mavericks series​


One swept, the other swept like gentlemen. It was as if the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks were eager to get on with this and wanted as much prep time as possible before Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals on June 6. Boston was the NBA’s best team by record all seson, running away with the East and claiming home court for as long as they needed it, including this round. Dallas went 50-32, which it’s worth noting would have tied for second in the East with New York. That still was 14 games off the Celtics’ pace, though, and good for only the No. 5 seed in the West. That had the Mavericks playing from down under to beat the Clippers, the Thunder and the Timberwolves, all while looking more like a title threat at each step. Boston mostly stayed above the fray as favorites, which brought criticism for lone missteps against the Heat and the Cavaliers and allowed some critics to poke at forward Jayson Tatum’s fire. The Celtics took both games against Dallas this season. They won 119-110 on the Mavericks’ court on Jan. 22, then beat the Mavs again 138-110 on March 1 in Boston. This is Boston’s 23rd trip to the Finals. Dallas has made it twice before, this one coming 13 years after the 2011 upset championship over the first edition of Miami’s “super team”.

Scott Foster, Tony Brothers among refs picked for NBA Finals​


Scott Foster, Tony Brothers, Marc Davis and James Capers were among the 12 game officials chosen to work the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. The NBA announced the selection on Tuesday, two days before Game 1 in Boston. Also selected were Zach Zarba, John Goble, David Guthrie, Bill Kennedy, Josh Tiven, Courtney Kirkland, James Williams and Kevin Scott. The officials were selected by the NBA Referee Operations management team based on their performance throughout the first three rounds of the playoffs. Officials were evaluated after each round to determine advancement in this year's postseason. Foster has officiated 24 NBA Finals games, followed by Davis with 20, and Brothers at 16.

Celtics rout Mavericks 107-89 in Game 1 of NBA Finals behind Brown, returning Porzingis​


Jaylen brown scored 22 points, Porzingis made an immediate impact off the bench and added 20 and the Boston Celtics powered past the Dallas Mavericks 107-89 on Thursday night in Game 1. Derrick White finished with 15 points for Boston, which led by 29 points in the first half and connected on 16 3-pointers in a powerful start to its quest for an 18th NBA title. All-Star Jayson Tatum finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Six players scored in double figures for the Celtics, who host Game 2 on Sunday. Porzingis ended his 10-game hiatus when he came off the bench with 7:17 left in the first quarter in place of starter Al Horford. With the exception of a white compression sleeve on his right leg, it was hard to tell Porzingis was coming off an injury. Porzingis finished the half with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Luka Doncic led Dallas with 30 points. P.J. Washington added 14 points and eight rebounds. But Dallas couldn’t find offensive consistency beyond that, totaling just nine assists on its 35 field goals for the game. The Mavericks didn't score 25 points in any quarter. Doncic said the lopsided loss wouldn't diminish the spirit of a team that lost the opening game in three of four series this postseason. Former Celtic Kyrie Irving struggled throughout, finishing with 12 points. He received a loud and extended chorus of boos Thursday when he was introduced before the game. It continued throughout the game whenever he touched the ball. The treatment came after Irving sparred with Boston fans and was fined for using an obscene gesture during a 2022 playoff visit to TD Garden.

Celtics beat Mavericks 105-98, take 2-0 lead in NBA Finals as series heads to Dallas​

Jrue Holiday led the scoring. Derrick White added a chase-down block. Jayson Tatum and Jayloen Brown pitched in, too — with their passing and defense. Holiday had 26 points and 11 rebounds, and White sprinted down the court to swat away the Mavericks' last chance on Sunday night as Boston beat Dallas 105-98 to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals. Tatum made up for a rough shooting night with 12 assists and nine rebounds to go with his 18 points. Brown scored 21 with three steals, White had 18 points and three steals, and Payton Pritchard’s only basket of the game was a banked half-courter to beat the third quarter buzzer and give Boston an 83-74 lead. Kristaps Porzingis limped his way to 12 points for top-seeded Boston.

Dallas

Doncic, who was listed as questionable to play less than two hours before the opening tipoff, had his 10th career playoff triple-double. But he scored only three points in the fourth, converting a three-point play with 1:15 left as Dallas scored nine in a row to cut a 14-point deficit to 103-98. Irving, who scored 16 points, has lost 12 games in a row against the Celtics. A day after Kidd attempted to sow dissension in the Celtics locker room by calling Brown — not Tatum, an All-NBA first-teamer — the team's best player, Boston showed why it doesn't matter.

doncic posts triple-double, takes blame for mavericks' loss
Doncic logged 42 minutes despite being listed as questionable until after his pregame warmup session due to a thoracic contusion that he believes he suffered while taking a charge during Thursday's Game 1 loss. Doncic had 32 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in Sunday's Game 2, but he pointed to two ugly numbers in his scoreline as the primary factors in the Mavericks' 105-98 loss to the Boston Celtics.

Porzingis, who missed more than five weeks with a calf strain before returning in Game 1 of the Finals on Thursday, appeared to tweak the same leg late in the fourth quarter Sunday. Entering Game 4 of the NBA Finals, and sitting one win away from a record-setting 18th NBA championship, the Boston Celtics told the world they would play with the same motivation they did through the first three games of the series. Doncic became the fourth player in NBA history with at least 600 points, 150 rebounds and 150 assists in a single postseason, joining Nikola Jokic, LeBron James and Larry Bird, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Boston Celtics Fans Get Into Brawl At NBA Finals Watch Party​


The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks weren't the only ones going head to head in the NBA finals ... a bunch of Celtics fans got into an amateur boxing match at a game 4 watch party. Friday night's brawl broke out between two men seated near each other in the crowd at TD Garden arena in Beantown ... where Celtics fans were having a viewing party of the on-court action taking place inside American Airlines Stadium in Dallas. It's unclear if anyone was ejected from the stadium or if police were called in to investigate. We've reached out to the Boston PD for comment. By the way, the Mavericks trounced the Celtics 122-84 in game 4 of the series with Boston now leading Dallas 3-1. Game 5 is scheduled for Monday.
