Batter up! Things to know as NCAA baseball tournament enters super regionals

Super regionals are the next stop on the NCAA baseball tournament’s Road to Omaha Four of the best-of-three series are Friday through Sunday: Evansville (38-24) at No. 1 national seed Tennessee (53-11); UConn (35-24) at No. 8 Florida State (45-15); Kansas State (35-24) at No. 12 Virginia (44-15); and West Virginia (36-22) at No. 4 North Carolina (45-14). The four series Saturday through Monday: No. 15 Oregon State (45-14) at No. 2 Kentucky (43-14); No. 10 North Carolina State (36-20) at No. 7 Georgia (42-15); Florida (32-28) at No. 6 Clemson (44-14); and Oregon (40-18) at No. 3 Texas A&M (47-13). The eight winners advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, starting June 14.

PAC-12's Last Stand
Oregon and Oregon State represent the Pac-12’s last chance for glory. The soon-to-be defunct conference was the most dominant in baseball until the Southeastern Conference began its rise to power in the 1990s. The Pac-12 has the most national titles in baseball with 29 and has had a team in all but seven CWS since 1947. Oregon is playing for its first CWS appearance since 1954 before it heads to the Big Ten. Oregon State, which has won three titles, is going for its eighth CWS. The Beavers will play as an independent next season.

GIVE ME FIVE
The Atlantic Coast Conference matched its record with five teams making it to super regionals, all among the top 16 national seeds. The SEC also has five teams in supers, with four of them among the top seven national seeds. ACC teams were 18-7 (.720) in regionals, best among conferences represented in at least 10 games. For the first time, six Nos. 3 or 4 regional seeds made it to supers. Florida, Kansas State, Oregon, UConn and West Virginia are the No. 3s. Evansville is the No. 4.

MCWS 2024 championship preview: What's at stake for two legendary programs

There are 31 champions in all, from the blue bloods -- OK, purple, burnt orange and cardinal bloods -- of LSU, Texas and USC, to the legendary underdogs and wonder dogs of Coastal Carolina, Holy Cross and Fresno State. Rice, Michigan, Pepperdine, Wichita State, so many schools from so many regions over so many years. Except two glaring MIA programs. The very two that will be competing this weekend for their first baseball natty and long-denied Omaha glory.

The threads that intertwine to connect the Aggies and Vols reach much further than shared June tournament frustration. The first time they appeared in the same MCWS was 73 years ago, the second series held in Omaha, when they were in the same eight-team field but never played in 1951. For those thousands of fans and alums who have spent their lives rooting for Tennessee and Texas A&M, that tension has become a huge part of their identities, for most of their living years. So, imagine what it would feel like to finally be able to let that go?

Texas A&M is rolling in Omaha, 1 win away from history

They’re so close, these we-want-history-now Texas A&M Aggies. The lockdown closer who was nearly cut two years ago, but Saturday night faced 10 Tennessee batters and struck out seven of them. The major leaguer’s son who had to step in for an injured All-American for the NCAA Tournament and has not stopped hitting since. The freshman leadoff hitter whose home run put a jolt through his team just three pitches into the Men’s College World Series finals Saturday night. The cast on the mound who have refused to let opponents up for air in Omaha. The coach who graduated magna cum laude three decades ago and has brought seven teams here, but still longs for the feeling only a champion would know.

Maybe Tennessee can yet find the answer that no one else has this month: How to beat Texas A&M. Fact: The Aggies are now 9-0 in the NCAA Tournament by a combined score of 69-29, and 4-0 here by a score of 23-8. Maybe the Vols can at least actually get the lead. Fact: No one has done that against Texas A&M since the Aggies landed in Omaha. Out of 36 MCWS innings so far, Texas A&M has led at the end of 30 of them. Maybe the Tennessee hitters can come up with the timely hits that the Texas A&M pitchers have refused to allow. Fact: The Aggies’ four opponents in this MCWS are 4-for-42 with runners in scoring position. The Vols had chances Saturday. They also struck out 17 times, a Championship Series record for a nine-inning game.
