A Babylon 5 reboot?

B5 reboot under JMS (apparently with a great deal of creative latitude), Doctor Who just got Russell T Davies back... we're on a roll! "Paramount does about-turn on Kurtzman's contact renewal" for the trifecta!

I never warmed up to the original because it just looked too silly / cartoonish.

Then the whole B5 / DS9 who-copied-who fight broke out, of course I instinctively joined Team DS9 with my brass knuckles (even if B5 probably did come first).

CONVINCE ME TO WATCH THIS AND TELL ME THE BROOMHEAD ALIENS WON'T LOOK LAUGHABLE THIS TIME.

I never watched the original either because anything I saw from it just looked incredibly cheap (these people are ALIENS...because they have funny hair!) and the acting seemed pretty poor. And yes possibly my DS9 bias. But I'll give this a shot, probably!

It was good at the time, but it never felt rewatchable. Also it got screwed over by the executives, they had a five year plan, they told them they had four, they crammed it all into those four years, and then told them they had five after all, so that last year was them peddling water as they has used all their story up.

Remastered version is out (AI upscaling of CGI only) and available to download from naughty sources.

It's a bit rough at the beginning much as DS9 was. You could cherry pick half a dozen critical S1 episodes then move to S2 when it starts to get going.

As for common complaints re: low budget & FX - it was made on a shoe string budget (about a 1/3 of what DS9 had). And while the CGI looks rubbish by today's standards, it was revolutionary at the time. Visual fidelity aside, B5's space battles blew anything Trek did out of the water. The company that originally worked on it (Foundation Imaging) moved over to Trek when Voyager and DS9 went full CG.

There is an avoidable cheese factor, but it has it's charm. S2 really starts picking up the pace. S3 and S4 were fucking awesome.

I remember reading a really long post about how it was influence by Lord Of The Rings.

I have liked some things JMS has written (Sense8)...but he also wrote that comic where Doctor Doom cried after 9/11.
