A decade on the internet.

Today, "October 5th" marks a decade since I first had Internet access. It has been ten years and I believe it needs mentioning in some capacity.

Things sure have changed since then, I've been around the block a few times and seen our corner of the web especially go through some tumultuous changes. Through my 3 years at TFN, my registration in '99 at TBBS during my time working on the Sacrifice of Angels mod for Homeworld... my return to TFN during the lead up into Episode II and my subsequent return to TBBS in 2002 and of course my registration here when all hell was breaking loose on the geek fields of doom.

When I first started posting on BBSs, I was connecting with a 2400bps dial up (external) - local phone numbers only. Hacking your neighbor's BBS and shutting down his door games was the thing to do on a Friday night.

When we finally got a 14.4kbps modem we could rip off an entire BBS in an evening. Well, if Mom didn't pick up the phone (which usually brought a loud report of "What the hell is that sound!?!!?").

Crazy thing is how much "teh internet" has changed since it started being available to the public, not just being whored by all them fucking "institutions of learning". Lazy slackers.

Crazy things like "teh". Back in the day you made fun of the kids who couldn't spell quick - look how fast I type and shit - now there's a whole subculture based on lol, rofl, and lollocaust.

Now the internet is mass of fucked up shit with every type of thing represented by a web page. Search for anything. You'll find porn first, but then you'll find that fucked up shit you were looking for.

Look at this board write here, the Mine Field. This is as unique a place as you can get, even for the internet. We're a slice of crazy human english-typing culture, the world is our oyster. All that shit.

I still had just over two years of formal education left before I dropped out of high school at fifteen. Good times!

Well, I call it education..

Was formal though!

I'll have been on a decade when 2007 rolls around.

ACK! I'll be 28 by then too!

NOESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

But, even though I've been on for nearly ten years, I still rarely know what I'm doing online.

I started with an AOL account in '94, on my first computer, a Mac Quadra 660AV (25MHz, 500MB HD, marked down to $1500 since Power PCs were about to hit the market; with monitor, external CD drive, speakers, SyQuest 44MB backup drive and various software, it came to an even $3000).

My first group internet experience was becoming a member of the gang in the Lambda Lounge chat room. I met a couple of people IRL from that and made a good friend. Later I joined an Elvis Costello mailing list, and met many people from there at Elvis shows.

Haven't met anyone from here (except Sardy, but I knew him before TK existed), although someone from LoNAF is occupying my couch for the time being.

I never realised that landmarks like that were coming up. I had access to the Net since I started at University in August 1995, so that's 11 years. That frightens me more than I care to say!
