A great man's birthday...

... has passed recently without any note from TK.

Quite the shame. Even for myself.

Another great man was born this month and his birthday is not tomorrow.

His birthday was 8 days ago.

That man is Bill Hicks.

This man knew he was dying of a terminal illness. You know what he did? He gave laughter and philosophy to the world. He was among the ranks of those like George Carlin and Groucho Marx (another one where there's more than meets the eye).

His discussion about the legalization of recreational drugs is the most noteworthy. He taught that Marijuana is not an evil drug. Like most brilliant men, he chose to use literary expression as the vessel for his philosophy.

A true artist and thinker. He will be missed.

I keep hearing about this 'controversy' where Denis Leary is alleged to have lifted a lot of Hicks's material for his own early act (and was apparently doing this before Hicks became ill --as the story goes, BH heard about it and terminated their friendship over it, and of course died before the whole thing was ever resolved.) I haven't watched enough of either's material to have an opinion on it one way or another.

Yeah, a lot of earil Leary stuff sounds like he just lifted it from Hicks.

Hicks was a bloody genius, and the comedic heir to Lenny Bruce.

Leary, I liked him at first, but them when I discoverd Hicks, I could see what phoney and a hack Leary was.

*sigh* Well, they say that only the good die young - and Hicks died way too fucking young.
