I want to smell dark matter
PROLOGUE

"Hello. I am your best friend. You are about to be shot at by Batman. You need to duck. NOW," said the silver robot that had just appeared in front of him.

"What?" he said. Then he heard screams and ducked, without thinking. Something hit the robot. It just stood there.

"Good," it said. "Now I'm supposed to tell you to run. It doesn't matter where, just wherever you feel like. You'll find me there."

"What?" he said again. He looked round. There was a man in a Batman mask pushing his way through a crowd of people. He stared as the man lifte up a gun. Then he turned and started to run. The robot was gone. Where had it gone?

And what the fuck was going on?

Batman and a robot!

Another shot run out. He ran before even checking if he'd been hit. The robot had told him to run wherever he felt like. So he did. He ran as fast as he could, pushing through people, trying to get away.

It was busy, it was morning and he'd been on his way to work when the robot and Batman had appeared. It was too early for this shit. He thought about how ludicrous it was even as he ran. He hadn't heard another shot. Maybe it had all been a mistake.

A dream? He felt too exhausted for it to be a dream. He'd ran down a side street. There weren't as many people. He was going on now, looking over his shoulder. No sign of Batman.

Not a dream. If it was a dream he would have woken up. But maybe he'd imagined it.

He heard another shot. He ducked behind a skip. Stupid. Should have kept going. There was a door open in the building next to the skip. He ran inside.

He ran all the way through it. It was empty. He came out at the other side, in a car park. Where now?

He kept going on. He looked back, expecting to see Batman coming out of the building, but he never came. He stopped for a moment...then the door opened again and Batman walked out, looking around. This was fucking inside.

He ran again. He ran through a park. There were a few people there. He started to worry that they'd get shot because of him. But it wasn't his fault! He wasn't the one with the gun!

There were a whole lot of buildings at the other side of the park. He was tired. So tired. He ran into the nearest one. It was stranged inside. Where was he? He saw a girl in a labcoat.

"You can't be in here!" she said. "Seriously, I'm running a dangerous experiment on..."

"There's a...there's a..." he was out of breath and wondering how he could explain. "Gun. With a man."

"Look, don't make me call security," she said. "You won't like that."

"Call them, call the police, call everybody!" he said. He tried to look for a window. Then he saw something. Just out of the corner of his eye, but then he turned and stared at it.

The silver robot was standing up against a wall at the back of the lab.
