A question about novellas

Big Dick McGee

If you don't know, now ya know
How many words is the "average" novella? I think I read somewhere that the average 300-page full-length novel is around 100,000 words, and that a novella is around 25,000. I've been working on a creative project for work that's required some intensive writing over the past 3 days, and to my surprise I'm creeping up on 25,000 words. I figure when I'm done tonight I'll be a few adjectives North of 26,000 words.

I always dreamed of being a published writer, and I know I have the ideas, creativity, and frankly, talent to write some really good stuff. My biggest obstacle has been my incredible LAZINESS. It seemed so daunting to write 10,000 words, much less 25,000 or 100,000.

Thanks for any info y'all can gimme.

If you're serious about writing, I would suggest submitting as much as you can to as many publishers as possible.

If you get lucky, an editor might drop you a line.

I wouldn't be so focused on writing only a novella.

Change your name for starters, unless it's a crime novella.

A novella is a narrative work of prose fiction longer than a short story but shorter than a novel. While there is some disagreement of what length defines a novella, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Nebula awards for science fiction define the novella as having a word count between 17,500 and 40,000 or 85 to 300 pages.[1]

Q: What's the definition of a "novella," "novelette," etc.?

A: For the purposes of the Nebula Awards, the categories are defined as follows:

* Novel — 40,000 words or more
* Novella — 17,500–39,999 words
* Novelette — 7,500–17,499 words
* Short Story — 7,499 words or fewer
* Script — a professionally produced audio, radio, television, motion picture, multimedia, or theatrical script

At the author's request, a novella-length work published individually, rather than as part of a collection or an anthology, may appear in the novel category.
