Beats me. To me it seems more like it would be useful as a muzzle flash suppressor. That way it's less visible and audible. I don't know about any other Arty, but US Arty is trained to fire at anything that remotely looks like artillery fire. You see smoke, fire, light, hear a noise, you shoot at it.

Stealth is always a thing that needs to be priority for any military unit.
