FYI, this is one of those.... things, Gear.

I had this picture:

of hers on my kitchen wall for, I dunno, more than 6 years. Had it from some journal or other, and I instantly fell in love with it.
It got lost in one of my moves, and since I had forgotten Mann's name, I couldn't get another one, which I have regretted tremendously - until now.

Amazing. I am very happy right now.
 
Mann's work is awesome and honest. And not without controversy easily available for the looking.

Being a woman and telling her stories with her own family (read daughters) she was a lot harder to crucify when the fundamentalist dog and pony show went after the likes of David Hamilton.

My favorite quote regarding her work comes from her wikipedia page -

Dr. Aaron Esman, a child psychiatrist at the Payne Whitney Clinic believes that Mann is serious about her work and that she has “no intention to jeopardize her children or use them for pornographic images.” He says that the nude photographs don’t appear to be erotically stimulating to anyone but a “case-hardened pedophile or a rather dogmatic religious fundamentalist."

The fact alone that some psychiatrist has to evaluate this is terrifying to me. FFS, people can't make photographs of their own children anymore without idiots accusing them of pedophilia/pornography? This is a strange society we live in.

Those pictures are intense, beautiful, honest, and capture the nature of children. Yeah, they're naked in some. Who the fuck cares.
 
I'm sure she's aware she pushes certain types of buttons. And she's made a fine living doing so. But that does negate the fact that some buttons are positively howling to be pushed.

If her works brings "case-hardened pedophiles or rather dogmatic religious fundamentalists" out into the bright sunlight for all to see, I say I'm glad to know where they are and I hope she gets paid.

I like this line of thought a lot.
 
There's no question her work and other like it (Sturgis, Hamilton et al) is tied to sexuality because everything is.

I think it's hilarious when someone has the skill to put the question of "healthy" directly and entirely in the hands of the observer.

Mann rides those lines with deft elegance. Providing the viewer with a mirrior in the form of innocence to see what he or she will...

No so much some of the others.

Still, I wish I was that smart.

In the U.S., there have been several parents who have lost their children over this. Mainly because of social media and fanatics calling the police on material they deem inappropriate. In some cases, pedophiles have taken innocent semi-nude or nude pic's from parents FB's and uploaded it to CP sites. The parents then lost the children. And they're not sexual photos, to the mass majority of people. National geographic has far, far worse.

Child Protection Services in the US is one of the largest fuck-up organizations I've ever encountered. Biggest group of assholes ever. Inaction in cases that demand action and action when there was no need for it.

Fucking muppets.
