A Thread In Which I Shall Say Something Nice About Democrats...

...and even more shockingly, about Harry Reid(!) The Dems are looking at blocking Blagojvich's appointee for Obama's soon-to-be-vacant seat, Attorney General Roland Burris(D), who has been charged with corruption.
Democrats Could Try Stall Tactics to Block Burris From Senate
Democrats could be in for a showdown as they threaten to block Roland Burris from entering the Senate next week -- but one option under consideration is to put Burris on hold as lawmakers send the matter to committee.

U.S. senators opposed to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's defiant appointment to Barack Obama's vacant seat could try to block the move by using a time-honored tradition -- stall tactics.

Roland Burris, the former Illinois attorney general appointed to the seat by the governor despite the corruption charges against him, plans to head to Washington next week when new senators are sworn in.

Democrats have threatened to refuse him entry, but Burris' supporters and some legal experts say they are on shaky constitutional ground since Burris is technically eligible and Blagojevich is within his right to make the appointment. Burris has already taken the Illinois secretary of state to court in a bid to force him to certify the appointment, as required by Senate rules.

So Senate Democratic officials are looking at the possibility of making a motion to refer Burris' credentials to the Rules and Administration Committee for a review. That could take months, by which time Blagojevich may no longer be governor, officials said. Burris would not be granted a paycheck or office space or floor privileges in the meantime, the officials said.

Senators could simply attempt to run out the clock, as an Illinois House panel proceeds with its impeachment inquiry and U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald seeks an indictment against the governor. Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn is waiting in the wings to take over and potentially make an appointment of his own.

"What Harry Reid can do is delay this for many, many months," said Democratic strategist Julian Epstein. "By that time, Blagojevich should be out of office, and then hopefully we can have a proper appointment."

Democrats are talking about the option of senators choosing between Burris and a rival appointee from Quinn, should Blagojevich be forced out of office.

"I hope we're able to move forward with impeachment as quickly as possible," Illinois state Rep. Susana Mendoza, a Democrat, told FOX News. "I think the U.S. Senate is hoping that we give them more options, maybe choosing between two different appointed candidates once Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn becomes governor. That's a possibility."

Robert Walker, former counsel to the Senate ethics committee, said it seems likely the Senate would refer the matter to committee while impeachment proceedings transpire. He said such an inquiry would be legitimate but guessed "there may be some elements of a stall to it." ...
What the Hell, Obama is actually doing some smart things that give me hope and now the Democrats appear to be not acting like partisan jackasses. What's going on here?

With the Congressional Black Caucus breaking out the race card 100 quatloos says the Dems will wind up giving in and letting Burris take Barry O's seat.

Where do you get that from?

From the article posted, it only points out a couple members of the CBC who have come out in support of Burris. Which is not nearly the same as the CBC coming out and throwing the race card.

It also points out that it is a black Illinois SoS that is refusing to sign off on Burris.

Bobby "blocking Burris would be George Wallacesque" Rush says he has the whole CBC behind him and ready to fight to make sure that a black man's in the Senate, that's good enough sign that the Caucus has broken out Ye Olde Race Card for me.

...aaand now we're back. One of the largest arguments in favor of abortions beyond the third trimester, Senator Dianne Feinstein, is in favor of admitting him. "It will give Congressman William Jefferson someone to talk to," unnamed sources report her as saying.
Sen. Feinstein Breaks With Democrats to Back Burris Appointment
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein goes against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in saying Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has made a legitimate appointment to the U.S. Senate.

A key Democrat broke with her Senate colleagues Tuesday to support Roland Burris in his controversial bid to assume Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Rules Committee that soon could take up Burris' case, said Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has the right to appoint a senator despite the allegations of corruption against him.

"Does the governor have the power, under law, to make the appointment? And the answer is yes," Feinstein said, urging the Senate to settle the matter. "If you don't seat Mr. Burris, it has ramifications for gubernatorial appointments all over America. ... Mr. Burris is a senior, experienced politician."

The comments flew in the face of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's assertion that Burris should not be seated in part because the move would be tainted by the Blagojevich scandal. Feinstein's stance is the latest sign of intra-party tensions over the matter. ...

It's all over, Reid has folded

WASHINGTON--Roland Burris won his battle to succeed Barack Obama as the junior senator from Illinois this afternoon as Senate Democrats dropped their objections and said he should be seated this week.

The agreement came after Senat lawyers said Burris met the chamber's rules and could be sworn in.

"Barring objections from Senate Republicans, we expect Senator-designee Burris to be sworn in and formally seated later this week," said a joint statement from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin.

Is Burris believed to have done anything illegal to get the seat, or is the opposition soley based on who did the appointing?

Meh. I can see the argument for being opposed to Burris on general principle, but really, if he's only holding the seat until they can hold a special election in 2010, I don't think it's a huge deal if he gets seated, so long as he didn't buy his way in.

I've only seen Burris on The Daily Show (very short clip) but he looked like an incredible idiot in those 15 seconds or so.
