In 1968, Phelps tried to commit suicide while high on methamphetamines, attempting to shoot himself in the head with a shotgun; he was so inebriated, however, that he ended up missing his head completely and striking a roll of insulation. Shortly thereafter, Phelps overdosed on a cocktail of alcohol and amphetamines.
