Another nail in the Republican coffin?

HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) -- Republican Rep. Christopher Shays defended the House speaker's handling of a congressional page scandal, saying no one died like during the 1969 Chappaquiddick incident involving Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy.

"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," the embattled Connecticut congressman told The Hartford Courant in remarks published Wednesday.

"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.

And come the November elections, the Republicans are going to stand around slack jawed and wonder why they lost,

I would have thought that was all water under the bridge now

Yeah, but the Republicans are dredging for excuses now in an effort to wash the pond scum off their faces.

He's got a point, though.

Teddy left someone to die, as a result of his drunk driving. He's still in office. Not saying the molester didn't deserve to get kicked out of office and any possible jail time he might get, but, Teddy got off scott free, and kept his job.

Ted didn't get off free, some may question whether he was punished enough but his hopes for the Presidency were killed then and there.

Shays is being ballsy. I've met him. He's doing it because he's a socially liberal Republican who is undefeatable in his district. He may damage other Repub's races but not his own. Plus overall, besides this unfortunate tirade he's a good guy.

Good point. At the same time though, Ted Kennedy wasn't the chair of the House Caucus on Don't Drink, Drive and be Stupid. Plus, Mary Jo Kopechne wasn't a legal minor. She was 29 at her time of death. Not to mention it was almost 40 years ago. How far back are the Republicans going to go when it comes to the “They did this and got away with it” syndrome?

Foley was the chair on the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. So while he was "trying to toughen the laws" on child porn and pedophilia, he was popping a boner in the Senate chambers every time a little boy walked by.

Now don't think for a minute I'm defending Kennedy because I'm not. People still refer to the Kennedy’s as U.S. royalty. I've always thought of them as political scum who should have been banned from politics period. But getting drunk and being stupid at the cost of another adults life doesn't carry the same social revulsion and condemnation that getting your rocks off over children does.

This guy deserves far more then he’ll in all probability get. And anyone who defends his actions, tries to divert blame or minimizes his conduct in this manner should have his ass booted right out of office.

He should be grateful he never ran for president, doing that never did his brothers any favours.
