As far his interest as the leading character, thus far he's beating Prince Myshkin, but falling far behind Raskolnikov. Myshkin just wasn't compelling in the least bit, while Raskolnikov was just too compelling for this character to equal.
Dostoevsky's doing a good job of writing the narrative in character, and that style is probably what I see as the best part of the novel. It actually does read pretty much how you'd expect Dolgoruky to write his notes, in form as well as substance (actually, maybe the former more than the latter).
Anyway, yeah. Solid book and recommended.
