Dual

RIP Karl 1991-2014
This morning, I purchased a second cage for my parakeets to expand into, as they were a bit cramped in their current one. My plan was to connect them by putting their side doors together and binding them both open, which I'd done with my pet parakeets as a child, but due to the litter holders on their bases, the two doors ended up being separated by a gap of about two inches. I rigged a little wall out of empty water bottles, mylar, and cuttlebone, but now the birds are staying in their original cage, seemingly uninterested in going next door (which is where their food has been relocated to). Should I just wait and hope they'll figure it out eventually?

Yeah-- give them till tomorrow morning, at least. I would at least keep the water on the side where they are spending time and only move it once the birds are freely moving about their whole quarters. An occasional treat might not be so bad, either. Critters can do without food for longer than they can do without water, and birds do have a high metabolism.

Maybe once you cover them for the night, or the lights are dimmer, they might decide to move over.
