Home run king Barry Bonds will be sentenced Dec. 16 on his obstruction of justice conviction, the San Jose Mercury News reported Tuesday.
BONDS FOUND GUILTY
The decision from US District Judge Susan Illston came after she ruled against Bonds Friday in his attempt to have the conviction dismissed.
The former San Francisco Giants slugger was convicted in April of misleading a grand jury in 2003 by giving an evasive answer to a question about injectable drugs.
At his trial, the jury deadlocked on three perjury counts and federal prosecutors have not announced whether they will seek a new trial on those charges.
Bonds, 46, is expected to appeal his obstruction conviction to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. He faces up to two years in prison under federal guidelines, but according to the Mercury News he is expected to receive a much lighter punishment based on Illston's track record with sentencing athletes for lying to authorities in the BALCO steroid probe.
Bonds, who last played in 2007, is the all-time leader with 762 home runs and a seven-time National League MVP. He also holds the record for most homers in a season, with 73 in 2001.
