Belief in the afterlife = self preservation instinct

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
The strongest instinct in nature is that of self-preservation. We are part of nature. Without life after death life is pointless and you may as well sit in a corner going "wibble". This goes against self-preservation. Therefore, we are naturally compelled to believe in an afterlife, to a point where our brains will trick us into believing it. For example, every experience with a "guardian angel" or outwordly spirit is obviously just a construct of our brains trying to comfort us. So therefore you can't trust anyone who says they "believe" in an afterlife because they've just been fooled by their own brains.

Of course, there are people who have accepted the fact that there is no afterlife and that life is pointless and yet manage not to go mad but in fact go on to have full, rich, rewarding lives. These are the people I admire. These are the people I hate.

*wibble*

Belief in an afterlife makes living not so scary, that is true. We fear the unknown.

All religion stems from a fear of death - almost all offer an alternative to just blackness.

Four score years and ten is a long time for fun and frolics in my mind.

Knowledge comes with deaths release? pah...

Following the bill hicks buzz I'm on tonight

"Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration … that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

Seven minutes of brain activity after death - your afterlife is your last dream and whatever you want it to be. Then there's the REAL afterlife.
