Joe Biden's denunciation of his own campaign's ad to Katie Couric got so much attention last night that another odd note in the interview slipped by.
He was speaking about the role of the White House in a financial crisis.
"When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the princes of greed," Biden told Couric. "He said, 'Look, here's what happened.'"
As Reason's Jesse Walker footnotes it: "And if you owned an experimental TV set in 1929, you would have seen him. And you would have said to yourself, 'Who is that guy? What happened to President Hoover?'"

In 1927 Bell Labs transmitted moving images from a 50 aperture disk that produced 16 frames per minute over a cable from Washington, DC to New York City and was received on viewing screens as large as 24 by 30 inches. one of the subjects used in the images was then Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover. In 1929, some of the first commercially available sets were coming on the market and, though not affordable by most, could be purchased by the more wealthy house holds in America. And these were considered as 'experimental" in the fact that at that time, no one really believed that television would become a commercially viable, long term market. So while his statement is questionable, it's not completely beyond the realm of the possible.

Hoover was POTUS in 1929... not Roosevelt. Additionally, Presidents weren't making TV appearances... even on experimental TV sets only affordable by the super-wealthy. They spoke on the radio because that's where the masses where.

If you want to be technical, Roosevelt WAS POTUS in 1929. An elected President doesn't take office until noon on the 20th day of January. So Roosevelt was the sitting President for the first 20 days of 1929. And like most, Roosevelt and Hoover were intrigued by new technology. Though "television" wasn't widely available to the masses, it was considered prestigious to appear on it. Most high ranking politicians are persons of ego and I doubt they would have passed up such an opportunity due to a mere inconvenience such as practicality.

Hoover was President in 1929. Roosevelt was elected... in 1932.... taking office on March 4th 1933.

March 4th, BTW was the inauguration day until 1933 when it was changed to Janurary 20th by constitutional amendment and went into effect 1937.


Bottom line: Roosevelt didn't get on TV in 1929 and talk about the Great Depression.

It doesn't negate the fact that it was an off the wall comment that in retrospect was pretty stupid. Doesn't really mean much beyond that. And we all know how stupid the media makes people who make a goof like that. McCain can't remember how many homes he owns, Bush likes making up new words all the time, Al Gore invented the internet and George Bush senior wanted to rub cocks with Walter Mondale. So making a big deal out of Biden's comments is really kind of redundant. They're all pretty much idiots faced with the pressures of public speaking and the medias microscopes.

Biden has always been kind of a jerk. It was a big risk to put him up for VP. He's going to need to calm down and clam up or else he's going to have a Howard Dean "YEEEEEEEHAAW" moment and sink the campaign.

And it's pretty damn hard to look like "the unstable one" next to McCane/Mammy Yokum.
