PS3 $900 in 2007
Merrill Lynch suggests a 2007 launch is still possible and estimates further overtime for those who want a PS3...

With Xbox 360's still hard to come by and Nintendo continuing to tease with the Revolution, it's been less then a smooth transition between the 6th and 7th generation.

The situation has been further compounded with a recent Merrill Lynch report alleging that the Playstation 3 could slip into 2007 for North America, whilst making the claim that each unit could initially cost Sony $900 (£517) to produce. Suggesting the promise of new processor architecture in the shape of the CELL could cost close to $230 (£132) per unit at launch, the report also draws the conclusion that a blu-ray drive in its infancy will cost $350 (£201) to manufacture.

To compare, research firms prior to the launch of the Xbox 360 calculated approximate manufacturing costs for Microsoft's next-gen format close to $310 (£178) for the Core system and between $470-520 (£270-299) for the Premium pack.

Further doom and gloom is prophesised for third-party publishers and NVIDIA as a result of the delay, although some hope stems from the alleged reduction of total costs to $320 (£184) per unit after three years of the Playstation 3 being on the market.

Perhaps Sony just wants to give us more time to work hard and be able to afford the PS3 in 2007...

It's all over the tech and main news sites. Sony's shares have dropped, the PS3 is not having a happy time and they may have fucked this one up badly.

Boo hoo, Sony.

I wonder how many Sony fan bois kill themselves in the morning after reading this.

I'll get the video camera...

I will admit that I did want a PS3. However, I'm not paying $1000+ for one and all its accessories. Something tells me Sony is having many many closed session meetings with developers about coming down off some of those specs and chip expectations.

My landlord's a big PS2 guy, and he was saying that if they wait until 2008 they can make the price around $350 for consumers (293 euro). He's probably heard this from a rumor site or somethin', but it's plausible.

I guess now the pressure is off Bungie to make Halo 3 (the flagship Xbox franchise) in time for the PS3 release.

You know, this sucks. I wanted to get the PS3 mainly for MGS4, but if it's going to cost that much then to hell with it. I'll just find an emulator.
