Suspect arrested for three Georgia shootings within 20 hours
A 39-year-old man was arrested Saturday for three shootings in and around Columbus, Georgia, that left five people injured, according to local police.

Justin Tyran Roberts has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and theft by receiving stolen property, the Columbus Police Department announced Saturday night.

The three shootings all took place in a span of just 20 hours.

At about 8:15 p.m. local time Friday, police responded to a call outside a Phenix City, Ala., hotel, just minutes across the Georgia border, and found a victim shot multiple times.

Two hours later, three people were shot and sustained non-life threatening injuries in Columbus. Witnesses reported seeing a Black man in a white shirt and blue jeans.

Just after 2 p.m. Saturday, a fifth person was shot and described a Black man with a white shirt wrapped around his face.

Roberts was arrested around 4 p.m. Saturday, but police did not reveal how they linked him to the shootings.

Columbus Police Chief Freddie Blackmon said at a press conference Saturday that they have not been able to determine a connection between Roberts and the victims.

All five are expected to survive.

“The events of the last 24 hours have caused a lot of fear and anxiety throughout the community,” Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson said at the press conference. “Our community is trying to send a message that we’re not going to tolerate senseless violence.”

Woman goes to restroom in Mississippi mall, man waiting inside beats and rapes her

A woman is recovering in a hospital and an alleged assailant is under arrest after she was brutally beaten, raped and then robbed in a mall bathroom stall.
Police in Gulfport, Miss., said Andrew Malik Jones, 28, was waiting inside the restroom at Gulfport Premium Outlets when the victim came in at 6:43 p.m. The victim told authorities that Jones forced her into a stall, physically assaulted her and then raped her, according to WLOX-TV.

Next he grabbed her purse and ran, attempting a spring through the parking lot, the victim’s husband told WLOX. But he and other bystanders nabbed him and held him down until police arrived.
The woman is hospitalized in New Orleans with a fractured skull and other serious injuries, WLOX reported. She and her husband had been vacationing along the Mississippi Gulf Coast from their home in Oklahoma and were with their young daughter, he said.

Jones, charged with robbery and sexual battery, is being held in Harrison County Jail pending a court appearance, on $1 million bond total — $500,000 for each charge.
Gulfport Premium Outlets general manager Pam Meinzinger declined to comment on the incident or on mall security, The Sun Herald reported. She referred all questions to Gulfport police.

Man protecting his baby fatally shot in Florida restaurant

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A gunman fatally shot a tourist eating dinner with his family at a Miami Beach restaurant as the man protected his 1-year-old son, police and a family member said.

Tamarius Blair Davis, 22, of Norcross, Georgia, told investigators he shot Dustin Wakefield, 21, on Tuesday night because he “was high on mushrooms, which made him feel empowered,” according to his arrest report.

61276e0774af2.image.jpg

Davis allegedly told police he approached the patio area of the La Cerveceria restaurant just before 6:30 p.m. and randomly decided to shoot Wakefield, who was on vacation from Castle Rock, Colorado. In a short video taken immediately after the shooting and obtained by WSVN-TV, the gunman can be seen dancing while people are heard screaming. The gunman then walks up some steps, the weapon in his hand.

Mike Wakefield, the victim’s uncle, told the Miami Herald that Dustin Wakefield died protecting his young son.

“This guy came in with a gun waving it, saying it’s time to die. He pointed the gun at his son and Dustin said, ‘He’s only a boy,’” said Mike Wakefield, who was not in South Beach but heard the account from his family. “Dustin stood up between the gunman and the baby and he shot him. He shot him multiple times on the green.

He said of his nephew, who worked in construction, “He was the kindest kid. He loved his family. He loved being a dad.”

Davis fled the restaurant, police said, and was captured in a nearby alley. Cellphone video obtained by the Herald shows Davis lying spread-eagle on his back and smiling as three officers approach with their guns pointed towards him yelling commands, warning him that if he touches his gun he will be shot.

Davis then rolled onto his side into a fetal position, before again rolling onto his back as officers approached. Davis screamed “I give, I give, I give” as officers flip him onto his stomach and handcuff him. The video shows a black handgun lying about 10 feet (three meters) away.

Tommy Davis, the suspect’s father, told The Associated Press that his son had traveled to Miami Beach with some friends. He said his son has never been in trouble or had mental health issues. No arrest record for the younger Davis could be found.

“This is an unlikely thing,” the senior Davis said. ’We are trying to find out what happened. You can imagine we were shocked.”

He said he didn’t know whether his son would ingest mushrooms or other drugs.

“You think you know your kid, but you don’t,” he said. “It is possible someone gave him something. That is something we need to find out.”

Davis is charged with murder and was being held without bond Wednesday at the Miami-Dade County Jail. Jail records do not indicate if he has an attorney. Police incorrectly listed his last name as “David” in their original arrest report.

UCLA student killed at L.A. furniture store texted about "a bad vibe"

Los Angeles officials are offering a reward of more than $200,000 for information leading to the arrest of a man suspected of fatally stabbing a 24-year-old UCLA graduate student while she worked alone at a furniture store. Brianna Kupfer was found dead on the floor of the store by a customer on Thursday not long after she had sent an ominous text message to a friend, police said.

Police say Kupfer was the only employee at Croft House on La Brea Avenue when someone came into the store last Thursday afternoon and fatally stabbed her. CBS Los Angeles reports that on Tuesday night, police identified the suspect as Shawn Laval Smith. He is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

Officers said Kupfer instantly had a bad feeling when the suspect walked into the store.

"She sent a text to a friend saying there was someone inside the location that gave her a bad vibe. Regrettably, that person did not see the text immediately," said Lt. John Radtke of LAPD.

About 15 minutes later, a customer found Kupfer stabbed to death, police said.

"I don't see us healing anytime soon," Todd Kupfer, the victim's father, told CBS Los Angeles. "I would love to tell you that there's going to be a point we're going to be better, but I feel like it's going to be a big missing piece."

Brianna Kupfer graduated from both Brentwood High School and the University of Miami, before returning to Southern California to pursue an architectural design degree from UCLA, CBS Los Angeles reported.

Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz asked city leaders Tuesday to add $50,000 to the more than $200,000 reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of the suspect.

"We will find this vicious criminal, we will arrest him and we will get him prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Koretz said.

Police released video Tuesday from a 7-Eleven store, showing the suspect casually shopping 30 minutes after Kupfer was fatally stabbed. He was also shopping at other stores before and after the killing, police said.

The suspect was described as a Black man with braided hair, wearing a dark hoodie, sunglasses with reflective orange lenses, a white N95 mask, gray skinny jeans, dark shoes, and wearing a black backpack. Detectives say they believe he is homeless.

Police said there is no known motive to the stabbing and they believe it was a random attack.

A vigil for Kupfer was announced for Thursday afternoon in front of the store.

Man fatally stabbed after fight breaks out at Dave & Buster's in Times Square

AAWP9Pi.img

A man was fatally stabbed at a Dave & Buster's in Times Square on Saturday night after a fight broke out at the entertainment venue.

The New York Police Department said officers were called to the Dave & Buster's just before 10:45 p.m. ET over reports of a man stabbed during an "assault in progress."

When they arrived, they found Allen Stanford, 39, with a stab wound to the chest. Stanford was transported to St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, but he did not survive his injuries, police said.

Three senior police officials told NBC New York that the fight appeared to break out after Stanford dropped an arcade prize near the suspect and several children who appeared to be with him.

They said surveillance video showed Stanford trying to place a prize box back on a shelf. The box fell, however, near to where the suspect was standing with the children, the officials said.

Words were then exchanged between Stanford and the suspect before Stanford appeared to strike the suspect in the face. A fight broke out between the two, and the suspect could be seen striking Stanford in the chest with an object in his hand before fleeing the scene.

Jesse Armstrong, 41, was arrested on Sunday and charged with murder over the deadly altercation.

The police officials said the arrest came after a security guard had followed the suspect out of the Dave & Buster's and flagged him to a uniformed officer after spotting him entering a subway station.

The Dave & Buster's location is known as a popular and family-friendly venue. It has also attracted celebrities, including Beyoncé and Drake.

Dave & Buster's did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nursing home resident, 72, chokes woman, 77, to death for lying on his bed

AAXdimW.img

A nursing home resident admitted to choking a 77-year-old woman to death because she lay down on his bed next to him.

Cliff Mody, 72, allegedly told staff at the Gold Choice Assisted Living & Memory Care nursing home in Palm Coast, Florida, that he had beaten his fellow resident. Workers called 911 around 2am on Wednesday.

‘I walked in and he had blood on his hands and she has a busted lip,’ a nursing home employee told the 911 dispatcher. ‘I could look at her and soon as I walked in and knew she was expired and I felt for a pulse and there’s no pulse.’

Arriving deputies found the victim not breathing and unconscious, and pronounced her dead at the scene.

She died of manual strangulation, an autopsy found.

Mody told deputies that he killed the woman because he was angry that she entered his room and lay down next to him on his bed, according to a charging affidavit obtained by the New York Post.

The suspect said he told her to leave but she did not, ‘so he decided to strike her in the head multiple times with an open hand’, a deputy said in the affidavit.

Mody claimed that the woman bit his arm, but he did not have injuries reflecting his statement, the deputy wrote.

‘Cliff advised that he then put (the victim) in a choke hold and that he put as much pressure as he could, later admitting to knowing that this action would restrict her airway and possibly kill her,’ the affidavit states.

‘When asked why Cliff chose to take such violent action, he responded by advising that he was “mad.”’

The woman had a ‘diminished mental capacity’ that caused her to enter the rooms of other residents and try to lie in bed with them, according to officials.

Mody, who has a history of attacking others, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with second-degree murder, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

He made his first court appearance on Thursday and has been put in jail without bond. His arraignment is set for June 13.

Detective: 22 charges related to 'over 600 child pornography and child erotica images'
AAXzdoD.img

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has done it again — just as they have in South Florida cases here, here, and here that CBS12 reported over the past month and a half alone.

Their Internet Crimes Against Children database sent a cyber tip to a Boynton Beach police detective on April 5, "in reference to eight separate images that were flagged as apparent child pornography and uploaded to Google on March 19th, 2022," according to this arrest report.

They gave the detective the Google account’s name, the associated phone number and two email addresses.

The detective wrote, “After reviewing all eight images provided in the cyber tip, it was confirmed that all images were in fact child pornography images and the file names/hash values associated with the images were identified as part of a known series of child pornography in which the child or child(s) were already previously identified by law enforcement.”

In this case, the detective did an initial background search on the phone number and Google email address, and they came back to Jermaine Omar Bueford, 35, of Boynton Beach.

The detective got a subpoena for the phone number and wrote, “AT&T confirmed the phone number was registered to Jermaine Bueford with address of and an email address of”

They matched what the National Center sent the detective.

Then, the detective got a subpoena for the Comcast IP address and the results “again confirmed the IP address used was registered to Jermaine Bueford out of [address] with the same phone number and the email user account names provided were [first] and [second].”

After that, the detective got a search warrant, which was executed on April 28.

“Contact with made with Bueford at his residence. Bueford was provided a copy of the search warrant and read his Miranda warning. Bueford agreed to speak with detectives in a sworn recorded statement the following is a brief summary:
“Bueford stated this all makes sense because he did receive a notification alert on his phone about a month ago from Google stating his Google account was flagged for illegal material. Bueford stated he attempted to call and speak with Google about the alert, but he could not reach anyone at Google, and he never tried to follow up again. Bueford stated he figured out it was from the child pornography images that he received in a Google chat not too long ago.
“Bueford explained he is part of a Google chat room which exchanges adult pornography images and videos and sometimes in order to view the image or video sent in the chat, you have to click on the folder. Bueford stated on this particular occasion he clicked on the folder which opened up an unknown amount of child pornography images. Bueford admitted to viewing two of the images that were provided in the cyber tip out of the eight confirmed child pornography images before closing out the folder. At that time, Bueford stated it was not his intention to view child pornography images and he did not intentionally save the images to his phone. Bueford stated he believes the folder which contain the images was called ‘Cousins’ and the chat room he was in was called something in the line of ‘RJStrokes.’

“Bueford stated there should not be any other child pornography images or videos on his electronics and he signed a consent to search for all his electronics in the home. Bueford also provided the passcode for his cell phone, laptop, and Google account. Bueford confirmed again his phone number and email addresses which matched the ones provided in the cyber tip.

“All the below electronics were recovered from the home to include a silver hard drive that was found in a locked safe that Bueford had in his closet and the key was provided to PD after Bueford directed detectives to his vehicle to retrieve the key from his center console.
  • “1 gray HP laptop with serial number,
  • 1 black Acer laptop with the model number,
  • 1 blue HP laptop with serial number,
  • 19 miscellaneous flash drives,
  • 1 white Apple iPad with serial number,
  • 1 black Samsung tablet,
  • 1 black Android pixel phone,
  • 1 black Nikon camera,
  • 1 black Galaxy edge, and
  • 1 black phone.
“Beaufort was provided with a property exchange receipt for his property and detectives left the residence without incident.”
It didn’t take long to find what was stored.
...revealed over 600 child pornography and child erotica images...
“An initial forensic examination of the collected electronics revealed over 600 child pornography and child erotica images of prepubescent to pubescent male children ranging from 7 years old to 14 years old found on the silver hard drive collected from the locked safe which Bueford stated belonged to him. The images and/or videos are located in several different folders on the hard drive, but an initial review shows 173 images and/or videos in folder labeled ‘Nephews,’ 671 images and/or videos in a folder labeled ‘Sinclair’ and 112 images and/or videos in a folder labeled ‘invite 123321.’”
Then, it was time for the arrest.
Bueford returned to BBPD on his own free...
Bueford returned to BBPD on his own free...

“Thus, when Bueford returned to BBPD on his own free will later that day to collect his electronics, he was subsequently arrested for 20 counts of possession of 10 or more images of child pornography contrary to [the law] as Bueford possessed 10 or more images of any form of child pornography, regardless of content, and the content of at least one image contains prepubescent to pubescent male children ranging from 7 years old to 14 years old posing with an emphasis of the images on the child's [body part #1] and/or [body part #2].

“Additionally, Bueford will be charged with two counts of possession, control, or intentionally view a sexual performance by a child contrary to [the law] as Bueford did unlawfully and knowingly possess, control, or intentionally view two images which, in whole or in part, Bueford knew to include any sexual conduct by a child.”

Jermaine Bueford was booked on April 28 at 8:03 p.m.

Bail was set at $10,000 for each of the 20 counts of child porn possession and $10,000 for each of the two counts of sexual performance by a child.

He wasn't released in lieu of $220,000 bond until May 3, at 4:16 a.m.

4-year-old ‘dipped in boiling water' by stepfather, affidavit says

AAY51O7.img

TYLER, Texas (KETK) - A Tyler man was arrested on Monday after his 4-year-old stepson suffered third-degree burns in a bathtub, according to police.

Joshua Tranair Meekings, 26, has been charged with injury to a child, a felony in the first degree. He is currently in jail on a $1 million bond.

According to an arrest affidavit, on Friday, May 27, a detective with the Smith County Sheriff’s office was notified of a CPS report concerning an injury to a child. The child’s injuries were so severe that he was flown to Parkland Hospital in Dallas the day before after being stabilized in Tyler for burn injuries.

The child’s stepfather, Meekings, reportedly told medical staff at Parkland that the child had bumped into a stove and knocked over a boiling pot of water, according to the affidavit. However, the CPS case worker claimed that the burn injuries were not consistent with Meekings’ story and that the burns were more likely from the child being dipped in boiling water.

The affidavit states that the detective contacted the mother of the child, who said that she received a call from Joshua at around 5 p.m. on May 26 concerning her son and that 11 minutes later, the two arrived at their home, the child wrapped in a brown towel. Once she saw her son’s injuries, she had Joshua call 911, which she said he did.

The mother stated that Meekings claimed that the babysitter had called him because the child had soiled himself at her house and that Meekings had to go clean the child up there, according to the arrest affidavit. He allegedly further told the mother that upon his arrival at the sitter’s house, he undressed the child, put him in the bathtub and turned the water on before going to play video games with his friend who was also there, leaving the child alone in the bathroom.

According to the affidavit, the detective contacted Meekings the same day for his side of the story. He claimed that he placed the child in the bathtub and left him there for three to five minutes while he played video games, the document shows.

Finally, the detective spoke with a doctor at Parkland hospital, who stated that the child had suffered burns on up to 36% of his body, mainly including his buttocks, back of thighs, complete lower legs and feet as well as his right arm, according to the affidavit. The doctor further stated that the majority of the burns are third degree and that the child will require multiple surgeries.

Crime scene investigators then conducted a temperature test of the faucet water at the sitter’s house, finding that the water ran upwards of 145 degrees Fahrenheit and, once pooled, lowered to 140 degrees.

Despite Meekings’ claim that he left the child in the bathtub, the affidavit states that it is believed that he held the child down in the bathtub, causing the severe burn injuries.

The warrant for Meeking’s arrest was issued on May 27.

Rapper Kodak Black arrested in Florida on drug charges

The rapper Kodak Black has been arrested in Florida and charged with drug offenses, authorities said Friday.

The arrest came at approximately 4:30 p.m., when troopers saw a purple Dodge Durango with window tints that appeared to be darker than legally allowed, and an expired registration, Florida's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said in a statement.

When they stopped the vehicle, troopers encountered the "strong odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle's interior," the statement said. Upon searching the Durango, troopers found a bag with 31 white tablets, which they later identified as oxycodone. More than $74,000 in cash was also found in the car, authorities said.

The driver was identified as 25-year-old Bill K. Kapri, who performs under the name Kodak Black. Kapri, whose license was found to have expired more than 30 days ago, was arrested and taken to the Broward County Jail.

Kapri was charged with trafficking in oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance, The Associated Press reported.

Kapri's attorney asked the public on Twitter to "Never Judge a case based on an arrest," writing that, "There are always additional facts and circumstances that give rise to a defense, especially in this case."

"We will get him a bond today and move forward with resolving the matter quickly," his attorney said.

AAZDxeG.img

Kapri is slated to perform at Miami's Rolling Loud festival on July 24.

This is not the first time Kapri has been arrested. In 2019, he was arrested on weapons and drug charges while trying to enter the U.S. from Canada.

Later that year, he pleaded guilty to a separate set of charges and was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for knowingly making a false and fictitious written statement in order to "unlawfully acquire firearms." Former President Donald Trump commuted his sentence in January 2021.

Kapri was also arrested on trespassing charges earlier this year, but prosecutors declined to move forward with the case, according to The Associated Press.

Mayor Kevin Lincoln said he shed tears of relief when he was informed that the suspect who police believe had terrorized Stockton since July was taken into custody around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Wesley Brownlee was dressed in black, wore a mask around his neck, had a handgun and “was out hunting" for another possible victim when he was arrested while driving around the Central Valley city, where five of the shootings took place, Police Chief Stanley McFadden said at a Saturday news conference.

“The city was able to sleep a little bit better last night,” Lincoln said Sunday morning. “No resident of this city should have to walk around town looking over their shoulder in fear.”

The mayor credited residents of Stockton who called in hundreds of tips to investigators that eventually led to the arrest of the 43-year-old suspect.

It wasn’t immediately clear on Sunday whether Brownlee, of Stockton, had an attorney to speak on his behalf. He was expected to be arraigned Tuesday on murder charges.

“This person caused a lot of hurt, caused a lot of trauma,” Lincoln said. “My prayer, my hope, as mayor is that our community begins the process of healing as a result of the serial killings.”

Police had been searching for a man clad in black who was caught on video at several of the crime scenes in Stockton, where five men were ambushed and shot to death between July 8 and Sept. 27. Four were walking, and one was in a parked car.

Police believe the same person was responsible for killing a man 70 miles (113 kilometers) away in Oakland in April 2021 and wounding a homeless woman in Stockton a week later.

Investigators have said ballistics tests and video evidence linked the crimes. A police photo showed the black-and-gray weapon allegedly carried by the suspect. It appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun containing some nonmetallic materials.

3 dead, 2 injured in University of Virginia shooting; manhunt underway for student suspect

A shooting at the University of Virginia left three people dead and at least two others injured, sparking a manhunt for a suspect Monday and earlier warnings for students to “shelter in place” or “RUN HIDE FIGHT.”

Gunfire was initially reported at a parking garage on Culbreth Road, near the school's drama building, at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the University of Virginia Office of Emergency Management said in a tweet.

"I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities," Jim Ryan, the university's president, said later in an email to students. He said two additional victims were also injured in the shooting and were receiving medical care. He did not release names of the deceased.

"This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia," Ryan said. He said classes would be cancelled for Monday, with only designated essential employees expected to report to work.

Authorities said they were looking for Christopher Darnell Jones (pictured above) in connection with the deadly shooting. Ryan described Jones as "one of our students" in his message.

"Call 911 if seen, do not approach," the University of Virginia Police Department warned in a tweet, sharing a photo of Jones.

The same photo appears on a profile for Jones in a 2018 football roster shared on the official website for the Virginia Cavaliers. The profile says Jones did not appear in any games that year.

The suspect was last seen wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes, the university's emergency management office said, adding that he could be driving a black SUV.
