Derek Chauvin is on trial for George Floyd's death

Jurors heard testimony from a series of witnesses today in the trial of former Minneapolis Police officer. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. Floyd died in May 2020 after Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd's neck while he pleaded, "I can't breathe." His final moments recorded on video, led to widespread protests against police brutality and racism as well as incidents of unrest.

Witness testimony continues today in the trial of former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. George Floyd’s friend, who was in the car with him on May 25, 2020 when they were confronted by police, appeared via Zoom in front of Judge Peter Cahill this morning to determine if he will testify in the trial of former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin. Morries Hall is on the prosecution’s potential witness list. However, his lawyer says he will cite the Fifth Amendment if called to testify, because some topics of his testimony could incriminate him. In a document filed last week, public defender Adrienne Cousins asked for his subpoena to be quashed since he will not answer questions.

Derek Chauvin Declines to Testify as His Defense Ends After 2 Days

He settled into a swiveling chair, sitting upright and a bit stiff, in a mostly empty courtroom. Holding a microphone in front of his chest, Derek Chauvin removed a blue mask to reveal a clean-shaven face. As his lawyer, Eric J. Nelson, asked a series of questions, Mr. Chauvin dipped his body toward the microphone and uttered the first words the public has heard from him in the more than 10 months since the death of George Floyd on May 25. “Have you made a decision today whether you intend to testify or whether you intend to invoke your Fifth Amendment privilege?” Mr. Nelson asked. The jury is expected to hear closing arguments on Monday and could deliver a verdict next week. The city is bracing for reaction from residents, including the potential for widespread unrest in the event that Mr. Chauvin is acquitted. The court plans to begin evacuating government buildings before the verdict is read.
