George Floyd's Family Meets With Biden Amid Negotiations Over Police Reform Bill

President Biden lauded the courage of George Floyd's family after meeting with them on the first anniversary of his murder by a Minneapolis police officer, a killing that launched protests and calls for police reform nationwide. The family visited with Biden and Vice President Harris at the White House on Tuesday and also met with congressional leaders in Washington, D.C. The meeting with Biden and Harris lasted approximately an hour, and was kept private. The White House said those attending included Floyd's mother and daughter, three brothers and a nephew. Biden told reporters that the meeting went "incredibly well." "On every anniversary you're happy people remember, but it also brings everything back immediately like it happened that day. It takes a lot of courage to go through it," Biden said of the Floyd family. Rodney Floyd, one of Floyd's brothers, told reporters after their meeting that Biden and Harris "showed great concern" for them, asking after their emotional state and self-care.
Biden had hoped Congress would pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act by the first anniversary of his death. Brandon Williams, Floyd's nephew, told reporters that Biden's deadline was discussed in the White House meeting. Referring to the president, Williams said, "He's not happy about it not being met, but all in all he just wants the bill to be right and meaningful and that it holds George's legacy intact."

A Year After George Floyd’s Murder

As the nation observes the first anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, we recognize that he is a historic figure whose hideous death was not in vain. The video of his killing that was repeatedly seen throughout the world was a damning indictment of the worst in policing and demonstrated that a country with great values and ideals has not yet reached its goal of equality. We also recognize how many similar deaths have taken place without accompanying video, killings that have been whitewashed by law enforcement officers who provided false accounts of a suspect’s cause of death. Although justice was served in this one notorious case, minority drivers must still be wary of being stopped by the police, some of whom seem to believe that a person who steps out of line or resists arrest is subject to on-the-spot execution. There is great symbolism in President Biden hosting the grieving family of Mr. Floyd at the White House, which we know would not have taken place in the prior administration.

Derek Chauvin's attorney says he shouldn't go to prison for George Floyd's murder

Three other officers involved in the incident face charges of aiding and abetting Floyd's murder. They are scheduled to be tried next year.
Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd with a knee pressed to his neck, should receive no prison time or far less than the maximum sentence in part because he is the product of a "broken system," his defense attorney wrote in a court filing Wednesday. Prosecutors argued in a brief filed Wednesday that Chauvin's "actions traumatized Mr. Floyd’s family, the bystanders who watched Mr. Floyd die, and the community. And his conduct shocked the Nation’s conscience." Chauvin, 45, was convicted of second-degree and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd's death in May 2020, which spurred mass protests and a national reckoning around systemic racism and police brutality. Chauvin is set to be sentenced June 25. He faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison because the judge overseeing the case concluded he abused his position of trust and authority, among other aggravating factors.

Teen who recorded George Floyd's murder awarded Pulitzer special citation

Darnella Frazier, the teenager who recorded George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis last year, received a Pulitzer Prize special citation on Friday for her work capturing the video that launched a nationwide reckoning on racial issues and policing in America. The video, in which she recorded then-police officer Derek Chauvin pinning Floyd to the ground with a knee on his neck, circulated widely on social media, sparking protests over police violence committed against Black Americans. Frazier was 17 years old when she recorded the video. Frazier was praised for her video's role in securing Chauvin's conviction on murder charges, including by President Joe Biden, who publicly commended her bravery at the time. After hearing about the Chauvin verdict in April, Frazier posted her reaction to Facebook.

Police retirements surged after George Floyd killing, data finds

Cops across the country have been calling it a career since the murder of George Floyd in 2020 which sparked national scrutiny on policing, new research shows. Several agencies in the nation are seeing an almost 45-percent surge in retirements and departures compared to the year before Floyd’s death in Minneapolis at the hands of convicted cop Derek Chauvin, according to data from the Police Executive Research Forum obtained by the Associated Press. “It’s a wake-up call,” Chuck Wexler, head of the Washington-based group, told the outlet. There is a “crisis on the horizon” for departments that need resources, as shrinking staffs and increases in crime create a “combustible mixture,” he added. Hiring has slowed by 5 percent, the Forum also found.

N.J. city to unveil 700-pound statue of George Floyd

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka on Wednesday is set to unveil a statue of George Floyd that officials say will be displayed outside City Hall for at least a year. “The artwork honors the life of George Floyd, an African-American man who was brutally murdered by a white Minneapolis police officer,” the mayor’s office said in a statement. “Mr. Floyd’s death elevated the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement which has resulted in an international response, including protests, police reform measures, and the removal of Confederate statues from public parks and racist names from organizations.” The ceremony will also honor Juneteenth, which is Saturday and marks June 19, 1865, when slavery was ended in the United States. Also called Jubilee Day or Liberation Day, the date is when Union troops brought news of the Emancipation Proclamation to enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, declaring all people held in slavery must be freed.
