Chauvin Reportedly Close To Plea Deal That Would Make Him Explain George Floyd Murder

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who was last week sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison for murdering George Floyd, is close to reaching a plea deal on the federal charges he faces that would require him to publicly discuss Floyd’s death for the first time, according to a WCOO report. This plea deal could have been what Chauvin was referencing in the somewhat cryptic comments he made in court during his sentencing hearing on Friday. When given the opportunity to address the judge, Chauvin said he was not able to give a “formal statement” due to legal matters. However, “I give my condolences to the Floyd family. There’s going to be some other information in the future that will be of interest and I hope this will give you some peace of mind.” Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison for murdering Floyd during an arrest over a counterfeit $20 bill last May. This sentence was 10 years longer than what state sentencing guidelines recommended and was deamed “one of the longest any police officer in the United States has received in modern times for the death of a civilian” by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Nonetheless, members of Floyd’s family have expressed disappointment about Chauvin’s punishment.

Court of Appeals ruling puts third-degree murder back into play in George Floyd killing

merlin_62930850.jpg

The three former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd's death could face third-degree murder charges following a recent court ruling. The Minnesota Court of Appeals issued an order Wednesday reversing a District Court judge's order denying a request from prosecutors to add third-degree murder charges against J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao. The Court of Appeals ruling sends the prosecution's request back to Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill for reconsideration and allows him to hear more arguments from both sides before deciding whether to add the count in the three cases. Kueng, Lane and Thao are scheduled to stand trial in March 2022. They are each charged with one count of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. "The charge of third-degree murder is appropriate and reflects the gravity of the allegations against them," Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, whose office is leading the prosecution, said in a statement. "We look forward to presenting all three charges to a jury in Hennepin County." Lane's attorney, Earl Gray, and Kueng's attorney, Thomas Plunkett, declined to comment. Thao's attorney, Bob Paule, did not return a message seeking comment. The issue has a long history: Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes on May 25, 2020, was initially charged with third-degree murder last year. Kueng, Lane and Thao have never been charged with the count.

White nationalists mar George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery mural

A mural honoring George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in Portland was vandalized by supporters of a white nationalist hate group, photos show. The artist who created the “We Stand With You” mural of Floyd, Taylor and Arbery last year revealed the damage left behind by backers of the Texas-based Patriot Front on Instagram Sunday, showing their three faces covered with white paint and replaced by the hate group’s website address. Within hours of the white paint being spotted, people started calling Grijalva, who later arrived at the mural, where supporters had raised $300 to buy new supplies to restore it, the newspaper reported.
