I want to smell dark matter
To see if it was really as bad as SOME PEOPLE say or, as I suspect, it was still better than most tv shows and SOME PEOPLE just have incredibly high standards because season one was so good.
Occupation: An excellent start to the season. All the New Caprica stuff was great. I think this one started with one of those awesome inter-cutting scene montage things they do sometimes including Starbuck stabbing Leoben to death then calmly eating her dinner. Good stuff. And it had a suicide bombing and those are always quite WHACKED, yo. And Fat Lee!
Precipice: More great stuff, with the awesome scene where Baltar is made to sign the execution order.
Exodus, Part 1: All set up for the next one, but it's compelling stuff and Adama made a speech, so still good.
Exodus, Part 2: BEST EPISODE EVER. From Tigh executing his wife (Michael Hogan just pwned in season 3) to the amazing scene of Pegasus' destruction and Galactica jumping into New Caprica's atmosphere to Adama shaving off his moustache, it was all great.
Collaborators: This was another great one. Poor Jammer, BUT HE PROBABLY DESERVED IT. Felt sorry for Gaeta when they were all bullying him (bullying is probably putting it mildly, since they were about to kill him.) Responsible for the "HAVE YOU SEEN MY EYE?" meme.
Torn: I know a lot of people seem to dislike the stuff with Baltar on the Basestar, but I don't know why. I liked him going about seeing naked Boomers projecting and having crazy conversations with the hybrids. The scene with Adama confronting Starbuck and Tigh is great. Not one of the best episodes, but still good.
A Measure Of Salvation: Another thing a lot of people seemed to have a problme with in season 3 was Helo, but, AGAIN, I quite liked the direction he took. He's like a TNG character transported to the BSG universe. And I loved TNG. The whole cylon disease story wasn't all that great though and it never seemed like the humans' plan would have worked anyway. This one also had a weird scene where Baltar was being tortured but managed to take it by projecting sex with Six over the torture. KIND OF HOT? Okay episode.
Hero: This one, not so great. The whole Cylon plan to release Bulldog in the hope that he would kill Adama was too big a reach. Maybe it they'd brainwashed him or something. The acting was good though, but it always is. I think there were also some continunity errors in this one. This one DID have the Six/Baltar/Xena threesome though, but I'll still concede that this is a "bad" episode.
Unfinished Business: An episode of two halves. I liked the flashbacks. Starbuck sleeping with Lee then getting married to Anders the next day was perfectly in character. She's screwed-up, okay? If they had just left the Lee/Starbuck stuff at that and had them make up in the present day scenes it would have been fine...but unfortunately this was the start of the love rectangle of suck. And Adama suddenly having a problem with Tyrol was just a blatant excuse to have Adama boxing! I'll call this episode "below average" I suppose.
The Passage: This was quite good. Not sure why they decided to kill off Kat, but they gave her one of the best deaths. I think I actually almost cried at the scene where Adama tells her he doesn't want to hear her dark secret and stays with her in the sickbay until she dies.
The Eye of Jupiter: It was okay. Mostly set-up for the next part. Didn't like the Apollo/Starbuck stuff. One of the biggest problems for me with season three was making both Apollo and Starbuck so unlikable at the same time. The cliffhanger was pretty poor too, because it was obvious Adama wasn't going to nuke the planet and kill half the main characters.
Rapture: BSG is one show where the second half of two-parters is better than the first. UNLIKE STAR TREK. This one had lots of the mythology stuff, hints about Tyrol being a cylon (Spoiler: HE IS), more hints of Starbuck's special destiny, Xena finding out who the final five are, Baltar back where he belongs on Galactica, Athena getting her baby back and a Star Trek: Generations tribute where they have to jump away from the sun going supernova. Good episode.
Taking a Break from All Your Worries: Okay, NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE APOLLO/STABUCK ROMANCE, JUST END IT. That said, it was still well acted and the writing wasn't really BAD or anything...just not something anyone wants to see. The Baltar stuff was good. Was he bullshitting Roslin about his lab assistant dying? I guess we'll never know. The great thing about Baltar is that it's equally likely he was lying as he was telling the truth.
The Woman King: This was the most hated episode online, but I'd say it's fairly good. The Sagittaron arc was supposed to be going on in the background all season but most of the scenes with them were cut so they just seem to appear from nowhere here. Helo is in excellent TNG form again. I liked the idea that people didn't really care about the Sagittarons dying because they were so annoying. The ending with Cottle just suddenly deciding to actually believe Helo and do the test to prove the other doctor was evil was a bit anti-climatic, but it was a watchable episode.
A Day in the Life: Boring! Adama sees his ghost wife. Too many characters have conversations with invisible people in this show. The stuff with Tyrol and Cally trapped in an airlock or whatever it was seemed pointless too, though I did like the special effects when they were rescued. But boring.
Dirty Hands: This was a good one. I loved getting to see more of the fleet at least and the strike was a good storyline idea. Roslin's inconsistant attitude to Tyrol was annoying though (at first she won't even talk to him, at the end she's willing to meet all his demands!) and the scene with Adama threatening to shoot Cally was pretty stupid. BUT! Baltar talking in a Yorkshire accent! Genius.
Maelstrom: This was a great one. I remember people didn't like it at first, but I think they were just too freaked out by the ending and the "OMGZ I CNA'T BELIEVE THEY KILLED OFF STARBUCK FOR NO REASON!" when it should have been obvious that there was a plan! Great acting from Katee Sachoff here and an excellent study of suicidal thoughts. And great special effects and Adama smashing up a little ship. If anything! (I'm running out of steam.)
The Son Also Rises: A weird ep in that almost nothing happens, but the character stuff for Apollo is really good, it introduces Rollo and sets up the season finale, so it's a good ep.
Crossroads Part 1: I love all the courtroom scenes. BSG manages to do SERIOUS courtroom drama better than Boston Legal, which would have the judge being a racist or something. Lots of continuity references back to New Caprica which was an excellent way to book-end the season. Another awesome Michael Hogan performance too ("THE MUSIC'S IN THE FRACKING SHIP!")
Crossroads Part 2: Best season finale yet. More great courtroom stuff ("Everyone knows you tried to stab me in the neck. And you missed! Butterfingers!") Then there's Lee's five minute speech which is brilliant and really makes you want to see Baltar get off (even though he's evil!) and Rosli knocked down a peg THE BITCH! OR maybe that's just me. Amazing cliff-hanger with the music and the cutting and the "we're all fracking cylons" and as if that wasn't ENOUGH oh look Starbuck is back and she's been to Earth and she knows the way! ZOMG!
So I count 16 episodes that were at least "good" (with several that were "fucking awesome!") and only four I'd say were bad (and one of them was more "boring as fuck" than bad.) SO IT WAS A GOOD SEASON. I WIN!
