Building Muscle

Friday

Bazinga!
Okay, so here's where I'm at. It took 3 and a half years, a total reboot of the way I think about food, a conversion to healthy, gluten free eating, and tons of walking, but I've managed to lose 100 pounds. No joke.

But I am now what is commonly referred to as a skinny "fat person". I am not toned, just flabby. I need to build muscle.

Any suggestions, my peeps?

Pilates.

I have a stronger stomach now than I did when I was 25.

I am considerably older than that now.

headvoid--Pilates is a definite maybe.

CaptainWacky--The guy scares me. ;) Seriously, the exercises I saw seem like they would stretch more than build muscle.

My major stumbling clock is the fact that in order to build muscle, I need to take in a surplus of calories, as opposed to a deficit. After years of being programmed to think "less is more", that concept is extremely difficult for me.

I don't believe that argument entirely Friday. I think those bastards in Marketing have been selling their wares again. Protein bulking is fine if you want smear yourself in coffee and grimace on stage somewhere.

Getting your muscles toned and eating healthily is more important.Muscle mass is hard to maintain as well. I would tone up first, then build.

I agree with headvoid, serious calorie consumption is really more for when people are bulking up. You should be able to get toned on a relatively normal diet. Though really, as long as you keep an eye on how much you're eating versus burning you shouldn't run into any issues. If you do end up eating extra food it'll only be because you've counted out that you require it, and it may be the form of a boring shake, so it shouldn't tempt you into stuffing your mouth with anything vaguely edible.
