I dont know why they felt thay had to draw out the gambling scene either. poor editing there. I dint mind the over the top fighting; that's part of the Bond genre.
IMHO think he's the best Bond yet....totally agree with you about the switching between playfulness to cold heartedness.
Can't recall any of the others really pulling off playfulness...more like getting the last word in before offing the enemy agent.
 
I don't see the big deal about Bond to be honest. I mean if you're into it and you've followed the history and development and you know the names of guns (yawn) and stuff, then sure, but just watching one of the movies by itself isn't any better than any other decent action movie.
 
Well, the Bond movies have their own flavor. They're high class action flicks.
 
I like the one where Roger Moore says something smutty.
