Since I've been helping people in here for a long time and I'm a bonafide computer god and CKLT is also an excellent computer tech I might as well mention it.

I'l try to get to any and all problems that Tkers are having with their computers in as timley a manner as possible.

Bring your computer woes.

Ischy for Mac guru, definitely!

Ever notice that stoners make the best tech support people? It really seems to help with keeping from throttling people while explaining to them for the 500th time why it's a bad idea to open unknown email attachments or click every link you see while surfing for porn.

Colonel, thank you for your support (lol bad pun). I'll take the Mac questions, Menty and TQ can get the PC ones, FBI will do Linux...

Eggs... you do what I did: Shop for parts. Parts parts parts. Bare bones systems and cheap cheap parts will get you a computer for $300 or less, depending on how big of a monster you want to build. Consider that I spent $100.00 on my PowerMac, filled it with parts, and it's pretty badass for it's age. I'm going to spend a total of $400.00 on my PC, and it's going to stomp ass (for the price).

I want all new computers but I can't afford them now. What should I do?

-OR- start a brothel on the side as supplementary income, then use the proceeds to build a server farm. Maybe you could even host TK from there!

I don't have that kind of time, and I'm a lazy pussy-ass computer user who just wants things to work without sorting thru a half-mile of TNG Geordibabble.

So I like the brothel idea. Thanks!

Ish has a good idea -- build your own. You'll be able to budget yourself component-by-component, and depending on how much you're willing to lay down for each individual component you can end up with quite the badass system -- minus the extra bundle of Benjamins you'd otherwise be spending on nothing more than the name brand. Personally, having tackled a few hardware-related jobs lately, I can honestly say I wish I'd gotten my system that way.

Of course, if it's a mobile unit you're looking for, you're still going to be buying brand-name, as far as I know, but with OEMs like Dell allowing you to customize from bare-bones up online, you've still got a lot of options to choose from depending on the focus you have in mind for the system.

I don't have the time, knowledge or patience to build my own system. I admire those who do, but as computers go I prefer to be a user not a hobbyist.

Well if that's the case the you should go to Best Buy and get a Packard Bell. That company is going to be around forever. Lol.

If I had to pick a brand name, I'd almost have to say Dell. They have solid architecture, they even have some convenient case design, and I haven't seen a god-awful number of defective units. I've seen more dells on my bench probably because they happen to be popular, probably not because there are a bunch of sucky lemon Dells. Probably. And TQ's right, their online store is pretty custom friendly.

If I had my druthers, I'd shout MacBook from the rooftops. But price is a consideration, here. ;)

Also remember this cardinal rule: Desktops will always be less expensive, at comparable quality, than laptops. So unless you absolutely must must MUST have a mobile solution, your money is better spent on a floor-hogger and a workstation w/ a good comfy chair.
