Thought I'd start a thread for this Doctor Who spin-off which exists.

(I don't know if 360 youtube videos work here.)

"On the first day of term, BBC Three today announce the stars of the Doctor Who spin-off series Class - exciting young new talents Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah. They will be joined by Katherine Kelly, as she takes the role of a teacher and powerful new presence at Coal Hill School.

"Like all sixth formers, these four Coal Hill School students have hidden secrets and desires. They are facing their own worst fears, navigating a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow - and possibly the end of existence.

"Coal Hill School has been a part of the Doctor Who Universe since the very beginning, but that has come at a price. All the time travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.

"Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. Prepare yourselves, Class is coming."

I hope they do a tasteless storyline so a newspaper can run the outraged single word headline "CLASSLESS!"

Well one of the gays seems to be the alien boy so they could say he's experimenting with kissing everything, as aliens sometimes do.

The alien boy from the Sarah Jane Adventures (Luke) was going to turn out to be gay in a later episode but it got cut (then the show ended with the untimely death of the main actress.)

Can't imagine Luke being gay. Or anything. I mean, the whole show was completely sexless. Sarah Jane called her computer "Mr Smith".

I watched the first two episodes as they are on iPlayer (I watched them on tv using technology.)

It was...fine. Not bad. But nothing was exceptionally good either? There was a lot of stuff that was so typical of these Buffy-type shows: the nerdy teen girl who can't get a date even though she's played by a hot 25 year old actress, the asshole sports guy who doesn't want to be friends with nerds, the alien who takes things literally (AND a foreign boy who also takes things literally but he was only in the first episode?) Too many cliches, not enough cliches turned on their heads. Obviously the highlight of the first episode was when The Doctor showed up because Peter Capaldi is awesome, but that was kind of a problem becasue we're supposed to care about the regular characters once he went away and I didn't. When the Doctor made his speech about how special they all are it felt unearned because they hadn't really done anything remarkable. Some of the acting was dodgy too (football boy I'm looking at you.)

Second episode episode was again just "okay" but I I found the resolution confusing. They just quickly rattled off something about a dragon being trapped in a man's skin (somehow?) and its mate needing blood and then football buy made a speech and the dragon dragged the guy away...and that was it? The stuff with the robot inspector was more interesting and Katherine Kelly was the standout of the main cast.

So yeah, I'll keep watching but it didn't impress me much.

Also if you took out the gore and swearing it could have been SJA. But I guess the kids today will only watch things if they have gore and swearing?

Episode 3 - This one had a better sci-fi idea (even though it reminded me of Futarama's "The Beast With a Billion Back".) The idaa of using a science fiction plot to exame Tanya's grief is good! But where it failed was execution. Why was the main tentacle only going after Tanya? Surely there were thousands of other people not far away who it could also target? What happened to all the other people we saw being held by tentacles or dragged away? Did they just die? (I guess we saw that Tanya's mum didn't die.) But worst was when April and Ram just sat down in the middle of it all so she could explain her backstory. Then they kissed because, umm...the script? I mean he was nothing but a dick to her before this scene and he'd just seen his dead girlfriend five minutes before so it felt really weird. I'm not sure what the point of dead girlfriend was when she just said "Ram!" a few times then disappeared.

Episode 4 - You know what I think the biggest problem with this show is? I don't really buy the friendships between the kids. There's not enough scenes of them just being friends. We have all these dramatic moments of them running to help each other but not the actual parts where they have a laugh about something togethr that would make us care about them. Even though Buffy season one had its problems I think it did the Buffy/Xander/Willow friendship well from the start. They should watch that!

Every time it cut to the Shadow Kin I was like "oh, fuck" because I couldn't understand what they were saying. The stuff with April was kind of good, I guess? I mean she did stuff. She took control of her destiny. I'm not sure how she knew that plunging her hands into her mum was going to heal her. Also her mum looks about the same age as her so that's weird. It was also an odd choice to have two episodes in a row where a female character dealt with their daddy issues.

The stuff between Quill and the head teacher was good. It's good that they're doing a story arc about evil flowers. Katherine Kelly is really a lot better than the younger cast.

So yeah, best episode yet but still with big problems!

Yeah I really don't believe the relationships between the cast, especially the dumb April/Ram thing because Ram's actor is FUCKING TERRIBLE and they have no chemistry at all.

I think the problem this show has is that there isn't a Xander. There's no normal character who's just a person. Instead everyone has a DEEP TROUBLED PAST that they can sit down and have overwritten monologues about to show how deep and interesting they are, and as a result no one feels like a real person.

I did like that the last episode seemed to paint the price as an asshole because he really is an asshole.

That bad, huh? Maybe it would improve if they had Captain Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, or Amy Pond drop by every once in awhile.
