CLOSE THE BORDER

First US flu death: A Mexican kid smuggled over the boarder and rushed to a hospital. Sorry about the kid...but let's look at what happened here.

Obviously, Mexico's health system isn't anywhere near the US's. So every Mexican with a sniffle's going to run for the border, and the earlier they get into the US the better as sooner or later our own facilities, while better than Mexico's, are going to be overwhelmed too. As they cross, they will infect everyone they run across. Since they are 'strangers' for the most part, they won't care.

Close the border. I know it's late, but do it. Issue "shoot on sight" orders for anyone trying to cross. We are going to have a hard enough time with the US cases flooding in. We don't need two waves of casualties.

I recall my less glamorous lifesaving training in the CG. Often a drowning man will panic as they run out of air and GRAB you, regardless of if they grab an arm or a leg that you are using to try to keep both of you afloat. When this happens, you take a deep breath and let 'em pull you down a bit. They will run out of air first, they'll let go, and you kick back up to the surface and get another breath. Don't become another casualty. Once you are clear try to recover the other guy if you can (odds are that you won't).
Same situation.

Close the fucking border NOW. We can even say "Hey, Cuba did it first!".

SB, I remember those lessons from RLSS. Of course you want to try and save the drowning guy if you can. But you have to be safe yourself to do it.
Makes no sense for you to both drown.

The kid was here legally. He was flown in on a commercial jet WITH his parents to visit with relatives. He got sick AFTER he was already in the US. He also had other underlying health conditions that made the illness worse. He probably would have died from contracting the regular flu.

It's this type of bullshit reporting that spooks that American public. Mexico is one fucking step away from being a third world country. More people from there are going to die from this shit because they don't have the medical facilities, the money or the common decency to be concerned for their fellow man. If they can't fix the shits you get from their water, what chance do they have of taking care of anything else?

^ I read a conflicting report, and yes, he was here legally according to what I read, but the info I had was that he was sick when he left Mexico city and his family moved him out of the city purposfully (probably due to those other health issues making his health fragile).

The rest of your post I fully agree with, save for that Mexico IS a third world country (been to a lot of it, and have seen the slums and smaller villages outside of Guad). Now, if you live in that sort of country and everyone's getting sick, what would you do if there's a better health-care system just over the border?
I don't blame them for running, I'd probably do the same thing...unless my odds of getting stopped at the border made me think twice.

And now, my city (which HAS a confirmed case, although the person is probably going to be fine in a week or so) is NOT canceling it's "Immigration march". Tens of thousands of people in the same place/time, most with relatives from Mexico (and how many of them have come by for "visits" lately?)

Great....is it a crisis or NOT?!?!

I just ordered two more cases of MRE's and picked up a few more rounds of ammo. Going to the range tonight...and I'm going back to using silhouette targets for a few weeks.

The report I got was from the DOD as part of a disaster preparedness package. It comprised local law enforcement reports and CDC reports.

I think the media is making this thing into a crisis. It's the same crap they did with SARS a few years ago.
