I haven't tried that. Some boards don't let you register with free, anonymous email accounts like hotmail, so I suspect gmail will be the same

I think even Wong lets you do it, since you need an invite to get in. Kind of useless, though, since you get 100 invites from the start and they recharge periodically.

You could start your own BBS, then use the mod email to register.
